Hi, I'm here from ProjectComment

This is a really lovely painting! It looks very realistic, and detailed, especially since you defined a lot of the feathers. The anatomy is nicely done, and the colours are beautiful. I love the subtle variations in the colours you used for the iridescence, they really make the bird look like it's shimmering. Whatever brush you used to edge the feathers is very realistic - it really does look like a white pencil. Your paint brushes look very real as well, so great job on the textures! The little white highlights on the head and back make the feathers look glossy, which help make it look even more realistic!

One thing I'm not quite sure about is the lighting on the bird's chest - all the chest feathers seem to be lit, even though it should be in shadow underneath the beak. I could be missing something, but I just thought that looked a little strange. Also, the feathers directly under the beak cut in a little bit too far - the bird's throat should be there, and so it makes it look a little bit sunken. Other than that, this drawing is perfect! And just to reiterate, the subtlety of the colours is absolutely beautiful. You did a great job!

Thanks for your constructive comment!

The brushes I used are dry medium brushes that come with Photoshop CS6. I'm experimenting a bit with dry and wet medium brushes, but I have a few favorites that are a bit crayon like. Glad that you like them!

I see what you mean with the lighting on the chest (and wing maybe?). The light was intended to come from the left (shining on it's right side, a bit from behind, so to say), therefore there's also a highlighted area on the shoulder. Lighting is definitely I should be practicing and I'll experiment with it in future paintings!

Regarding the feathers below the beak, a minor comment from my side is that a bird's throat is really small without its feathers and that probably there's no skin there. For example, look at this myna: www.besgroup.org/wp-content/up… . But I still agree that the feathers look off beneath the beak, too clearly erased from the outside rather than painted.

Hello, I'm a member of ProjectComment .
The eyes are very realistic and shaded incredibly well. I love the variation of colour you use to do the shading of the wings, it's a great attention to detail that is lovely to see. I believe if I have any complaints about the piece it's that the white speckles should be slightly more prominent around the torso area because sadly I initially believed those were not speckles but a part of the shading where the sun was hitting the starling.

RiverRaven In reply to CABARETCABS [2016-07-29 19:54:24 +0000 UTC]

Thanks for your kind comment!
The speckles are different in male and female starlings. Females have less speckles than males. I think I may have taken a female as a reference for the color . But I'll consider the patterns in future drawings!

Coming from

I must say, I just love the rest if your bird portraits I have birds and they are so accurate! Now: with this bird.

hes absolutely beautiful. I love all of the depth in the feathers, and the colors, and the shine! He's beautiful! I love how he has such a clear personality. (because all birds do ) his eye is so gentle and sweet. You got the bird anatomy down beautifully, and the feathers! WOW! Feathers are super hard to paint and draw. I can't yet XD! I love the papery style and how it's not 100% clear, it gives the picture a really cool sense of uniqueness and style! Love your art and keep at it! It's amazing!

Thank you for your comment!

You have birds? What kind of birds?

Feathers are incredibly difficult to paint well! They must be so systematic and in some instances, each feather must  be drawn with depth, but in line with neighbouring feathers.. It takes a lot of time to draw plumage. Which makes it even more impossible in a speedpainting but it's a good challenge!

I had a bunch of parakeets and finches but now I have a female cinnamon Pearl cockatiel named "pecan" and a male blue Quaker parrot named "Zircon"

RiverRaven In reply to SilverMuttt [2016-07-29 21:26:56 +0000 UTC]

Aw I have a female cinnamon pearl cockatiel, too! She's called 'Sjorsje', a very Dutch name (not typical for pets though). She's very calm and loves to cuddle, but I sometimes wonder if she needs more stimulation, because she seems so quiet - aside from the regular wii sounds (compared to male cockatiels, at least). And I have three budgerigars - the oldest just turned 11 years this month

I'd love to adopt a bigger parakeet or parrot once, but my boyfriend will hate me for it x). And bigger parrots are usually more demanding and high-maintenance than budgerigars or cockatiels.

RiverRaven In reply to SilverMuttt [2016-08-02 08:55:03 +0000 UTC]

Thanks! I read very often that budgerigars often do not pas 6 - 8 years? That's young, considering that they should be able to reach 10 - 15, or exceptionally even close to 20.

Yeah, my parakeets lived for a pretty long time. But I had to sell them because I had just to many birds sadly
