And that is why he, unlike Matthew, was not shocked by the news of a marriage of convenience, but took it as "a very interesting and exciting experience" and therefore gladly went on this adventure.

Mettaton CANNOT harm a person knowingly, if only out of ignorance, or because he or his loved ones are in danger. He realizes his strength, which surpasses human strength almost hundreds of times, and therefore treats people who "do not have magic to protect themselves" very carefully. He is also quite naive and has absolutely no experience in relationships, since he only saw it on TV screens. All his bombast, excessive flirtatiousness and arrogance is nothing more than a game for the audience, but sometimes he does not see the boundaries between real life and the scenario image and behaves somewhat tactless. He is also very touchy.
