From the way the clouds are interacting with it and the title of the piece I am guessing it's a stone ball resting on the island, but at first glance I thought it was a planet as well.

And the most obvious point of all, it shares lighting colour with the island. If it were a planet in space it would be shaded as if interacting with pure white light since space doesn't give a crap about sunsets or sunrises.
