Ah, finally done! Scyther was difficult to design, and I tweaked it a little bit compared to my initial concept. Scyther has some reptilian aspects (face and feet) but everything else is insect-like. So, ultimately I class Scyther as the 'half bug, half reptile' type of creature, similar to Flygon and it probably exists in a taxonomic class all its own. The scythes probably have keratin reinforced with steel compounds or something like that to add strength and sharpness, but they're not flat out steel blades. Finding the balance between the two aspects is important. Fully Praying Mantid Scythers or full Dinosaur Scythers with a few insect bits going on doesn't appeal to me. I used various animals for reference, Boyd's Forest Dragon and some dinosaur-like aspects for the reptilian parts, and grasshoppers and mantids for the insect parts. I wanted the head to appear mantis like, with the small horns representing mantis eyes (here they would be pseudo-eyes) and the central horn being similar to a Devil Flower Mantis . During metamorphosis into Scizor, Scyther becomes a lot more insect-like in appearance. I even kept in little pseudo insectoid limbs in the middle of the torso as a kind of tribute to Hexapods.
Time to start Steel-Type.
Done in Photoshop CS5 + Wacom Cintiq 24 HD in about 7 hours or so.

Wow, very interesting design. I love how artists are able to make realistic concepts of Pokemon by incorporating real world elements to make a cartoon look lifelike. You're incorporation of insects and reptiles really worked, especially in the face and claws/scythes, I can totally see how this thing would look like if it were a real life character... which honestly would probably creep me out a lot. XD
Your art style is also quite interesting, I've seen your work around and haven't commented on it before, but figured I'd just say that I love your style, and that it's inspiring for other artists to try and make something from a cartoon look lifelike by using real world reference.
Keep up the good work, I look forward to checking out more of your art.

Well unless you're commenting directly about the deviation I've drawn it's not relevant. To be honest I don't 'care' of you've drawn something that's similar to what I have and then you leave it at that. It adds nothing to the discussion; I'm sure many people have drawn 'praying-mantis dragons' but you don't have to spend your or my time telling me about it. It means nothing to me, sorry!

what i like of this is that some artist portray scyther like some kind of velocirraptor, here is more accurately portrayed as a insect.

You got everything right except it's scythes. There's no way it could cut or slash with wing-scythes.

They're not wing scythes per'se. Probably something akin to keratin or the like but reinforced with steel compounds as with many of the steel-types. It could definitely do some damage, but not 'cutting' through thick logs as the Pokédex suggests. Even chainsaws aren't fully capable of that.

This is just a suggestion (not a commission by any means). I think you should try to focus on the pokemon that look the weirdest. What I mean is draw Pokemon that aren't based on an animal or any inanimate objects, like Palkia or Arceus. I would enjoy seeing what you interpret them as and how you would make them realistic. I hope you consider it! Keep on making your awesome art!

Thanks, at the moment I'm focusing on my three favourites per type, which, for a studying biologist, are not surprisingly animal-like. Palkia and Arceus would actually be rather easy to tackle; it's the humanoid and inanimate objects that would be difficult (as not every inanimate object has to be disguised as an animal realistically). I only have one or two of those in my favourites though and after this projects is done I won't be tackling Pokémon for some time!

This is quite amazing. I mean, I like to put a lot of detail into my work, but I cant imagine the time it takes to do something like this! The overall appearance of this piece is as menacing as it is utterly beautiful. It took me a few minutes of obsessively examining this to notice the "fingers" that run down the edges of the blades, and I have to say, that's probably my favorite part of the whole thing. The design choices are both subtle and profound and the elements therein are very well balanced. Fantastic Job!

Thanks so very much! I don't actually spend an awful lot of time and effort on these as opposed to other superb Pokémon artists who can spend 30-70 hours on a piece, so there's definitely a few errors with my works!

That'd make sense since Kaiju translates to 'strange creature' and is defined in English as 'monster,' which Pokémon are of course (Pocket monsters).

Very well done. I know that some people, like Arvalis, do Scyther as more dino like but I always felt that Scyther should be like a kaiju and feel like a mix of several creatures. Nice work.
