Description Here's my first oil painting of the school year. It's kinda dramatic and desolate, but I'm quite fond of it. This piece will go into my AP art portfolio, and will be a part of my Concentration section, where my theme is suicide, roughly. My little friend Sophia asked me an interesting question when she looked at this piece, I was explaining to her about my portfolio. This piece makes suicide look like a good thing, it is more beautiful and uplifting than it is dark and depressing. I'm the kind of person that has that attitude. While yes, suicide can be a very bad thing, it represents a form of total self-control, you can free yourself, and that is something that not everyone possesses. While it is one thing to drive yourself off the edge, perhaps the even greater beauty is to take yourself to the edge and make the decision to not fall off. There is this unuttered drama to it all, and that's what I felt. So think what you like.

Pardon the bad picture, I know how to take pictures of artwork, but I don't have a manual camera!! I funkyied around with it in photoshop and cropped it up so it looked clean. And like many who have already seen this piece, they tell me that she is going to smack into the other cliff when she falls off. Well, if she jumps off, is she not going to smack into some cliff or some rock when she is falling into oblivion? Why not spare her the thrill and have her die a little sooner? Lol. I tried using glazes, which explains why it is so shining, I used lots of oil, to make it seem like the left side was farther away. My dad says she looks like me...but isn't it typical to portray yourself in your work? I didn't mean to, and I don't think it is me visually, but I'm there emotionally.

As for the white cloth, it is purity, one of my favorite themes. She falls because she is letting go of her purity. I know we all take those kind of falls in life, purity is a hard thing to let go of, I know it was and is still hard for me. May that be a little thought.

Awww...thank you. It's cool that I provoked some feeling. I'm generally really fast with underpainting and for this piece I left a lot of it untouched. The cliffs are basically underpaintings with a few layers of glaze. I thought it looked better with the canvas still showing through. Thanks again!

This is a beautiful painting. If only i could work with oil paints that well. I really should practice more. I love the sky, but the white dress really pulls the painting together. It makes the composition seem very peaceful. Are you in AP at age 16? At our school we cant be in AP until we are seniors...interesting....

Thank you, kindly. I love oil painting, but I wasn't very good at first. It takes a lot of practice and I am still learning. *sigh* Yes, you can take AP as a junior here, if you take art in your first two years of highschool...and if you have the discipline, as I'm sure you know. But that means we can take it twice, this year I'm doing Drawing and next year I plan to do 2-D. It's sooooo much work, I don't know why I do this to myself, lol. Thank you billions for your nice comments!

Very, very well done.

The way the horizon beyond her just seems to go on with the pale yellow sun is stunning.

The actual abyss, I'll call it, is amazing, with the white cloud-like covering over it.

It's an amazing piece. !

This painting reminds me of that subtle frailty that is mortality. Maybe we should all open our eyes and appreciate that we're living. I respect this painting, and would like to pay my respects to the torn person within the paint and beyond lost years.

Stunning work.

It's thoughts like these that are my ultimate dream to provoke in the viewers of my work. Thank you so much for your own beautiful insight. I completely agree, and it was a similar drive that led me to create this piece. I am so glad you liked and congratulate myself, actually, for recieving my very first intellectual comment!
