I painted this two Xmas ago for my portfolio. I had just gotten a Cintiq Wacom tablet from my husband and was so excited to use it during the holidays. Unfortunately Painter was unstable and I lost 8 hours worth of work on my painting! Luckily I had a old psd version. Now I save 2 redundant copies and have an external hard drive! I used photo references from an aquarium I visted during my honeymoon (yes, always thinking of art...and kung fu). I think if I were to redo this composition, I would have had a more intimate interaction between the characters. I still want to depict the little mermaid meeting the sea witch. I think that would be an awesome piece of artwork.Related content

You not only nailed the under-water lighting and colering of this picture perfectly, but you feel instantaneous emotions of desperation and survival. This is cover-art worthy.

Beautiful piece! One critique though... the position of her hands. It seems like an unnatural position. Would seem difficult to grip and pull someone up with both hands facing the same way. But other than that, like I said, it's beautiful.

When I did a Google Image search this striking piece grabbed my attention immediately. Above all, this mermaid is beautiful.

Beautiful work. Very realistic. Her tail is kinda wobbly, which is a pity with so much focus on it... but oh well, it's probably just me being picky. Her face is stunning, and it is all in all a gorgeously composed piece. ^w^

the scene that always caught me in the original story was when she's going through to see the witch she sees another dead little mermaid entangled in the weeds....it would be awesome if you did something like that
