This is my latest digital painting using Affinity Photo, Paintstorm Studio and Corel Painter 2019 “Cathedral Mesa, Arizona in Moonlight 1871”.

 

 Dedication: To Timothy O’ Sullivan, the photographer that took the original photograph in 1871 I used for the inspiration and bases for this digital painting.

Digital Painting

Styles used: Impasto, Wet on Wet (Bob Ross Style) & Traditional.

Software used: Affinity Photo, Paintstorm Studio & Corel Painter 2019 to get the desired affects I wanted.

 

    1.       Laid out sketch in AP, exported to Photoshop PSD file, use PSD file so as to transfer between programs (AP, Paintstorm & Painter 2019) to achieve the affects desired.

 

    2.       The Sketch.

 

    3.       Created a digital sketch layer using pen & Ivory Black on a Transparent Background – then exported it as a PSD file.

 

The Background, Sky & Clouds.

 

    4.       Started with solid Thick Paint layer filled with Midnight Black in Painter 2019, moved to AP set layer blend = Multiply

    5.       Added new layer filled with Phthalo Blue background in AP, blend = Multiply then added a layer (White) mask – Used my No. 3 Cloud brush (I created for usage in all my programs) – Opacity = 14% - Flow = 14% Hardness = 7% Blend = Vivid

    6.       Added new layer filled with Light Purple background in AP, blend = Multiply then added a layer (White) mask - Used my No. 3 Cloud brush (I created for usage in all my programs) – Opacity = 14% - Flow = 14% Hardness = 7% Blend = Vivid

    7.       Added new layer filled with Yellow Ochre background in AP, blend = Multiply then added a layer (White) mask- Used my No. 3 Cloud brush (I created for usage in all my programs) – Opacity = 14% - Flow = 14% Hardness = 7% Blend = Reflection

    8.       Grouped all Background layers the enhanced with the following adjustments.

     9.       Levels – Opacity = 7% Blend = Exclusion

    10.   HSL – Opacity = 100% Blend = Screen

    11.   Curves – Master - Opacity = 35% Blend = Saturation

    12.   Exported to PSD file and moved to Painter 2019.

 

Ground – Snow & Foliage Layers

 

    13.   New Thick Paint Layer filled with medium Dark Sienna – Opacity = 100% – Blend = Multiply

     14.   New Thick Paint Layer (Snow Cap) color = White, brush = Heavy Texture Palette Knife – Opacity = 100% - Flow = 50% Blend = Normal

    15.   New Thick Paint Layer (foliage) color = Yellow Ochre, brush = Soft Extra Fine Spray – Opacity = 14% - Flow = 21% Blend = Average (Used to slowly built up foliage)

    16.   Saved to PSD file and moved to AP

    17.   Levels – Opacity = 28% Blend = Overlay

    18.   HSL – Opacity = 100% Blend = Color Burn

    19.   Curves – Master - Opacity = 0% Blend = Vivid Light

    20.   Exported to PSD file and moved to Paintstorm Studio.

    21.   New Layer (Snow Dusting) color = Off White, Snow Dusting brush I created = Lightly Textured Soft Spray – Opacity = 21% - Flow = 21% Blend = Normal (Built up dusting until desired effect attained)

    22.   Watermark – Copyright and Signature layers added – Opacity = 100% Blend = Multiply

    23.   Saved to PSD file and moved to AP for final enhancements and resizing.

    24.   Levels Black 0% / White 79% – Opacity = 21% Blend = Overlay

    25.   White Balance -40% / Tint 6 % – Opacity = 0% Blend = Reflect

    26.   HSL Hue -7% / Saturation 14% / Luminosity 2%  – Opacity = 14% Blend = Soft Light

    27.   Contrast / Brightness Contrast 21% / Brightness 28% – Opacity = 63% Blend = Luminosity

    28.   Shadows / Highlights Shadows 7% / Highlights 35%  – Opacity = 100% Blend = Normal

    29.   Curves– Master - Opacity = 100% Blend = Lighten

    30.   Resized painting to 10800 x 7200 300 dpi

    31.   Exported to JPG that you see.
