Description "Ghost ghost I know you live within me feel as you fly.."
-Neutral Milk Hotel, Ghost

The song is (a very, very strange) one on an album that I listened to quite a lot whilst painting this; when racking my brain for a title, my eye fell upon 'GHOST.' White horse, Ghost, perfect.

Anyways it's my favourite song on the album.

Acrylic and some ink on panel, so much tiny, fussy detail that I shall upload a detail of it! I very happily spent hours on said fussy detail; my art professor would have a cow. *happy sigh*

Thank you very much! I actually hid this painting from myself. No idea where it is right now.. a bit sad, but that also saves me from angsting over whether or not I should do the financially responsible thing, and try to sell it. Muah hah! I outsmart me!

Thank you very mucho!! My goodness, I had forgotten about this one.. I still need to varnish it! See how dull the blue looks..? There's actually all kinds of little ... *gestures*... dotty things in there!.. but if I photographed it after putting a clear-coat on, I'd have glare. Pooey, I say!

I guess that wasn't terribly relevant, sorry.. ^^: Anyway, I am glad you liked it - thank you for taking the time to comment on it!

I think it looks nice as a matte finish, it's gorgeous! And on seeing the detail shot I can see the speckley whotsits!

Brilliant picture, wish i could do paints like that I'm crap at em, lol.

Only things I've ever successfully painted was the Gnaw eye painting and Standard bred and the Scissor hips, and possibly the Wrapped dragon. Other than that, i stick to inks & pencil

The texture is photographed; and let me tell you, I am a terrible photographer. *shudder*

If it helps you to know:

1.) Photograph textures BEFORE you gloss. This needs a topcoat something awful.. it looks very dry and dull to me.. but glossy surfaces catch glare like little lizards catch bugs. Some artists will even go so far as to deliberately matte the surface of their work before photographing it; I'm not that nuts.

2.)Inxay flash! I photographed this outside, in my driveway , in the late afternoon.. the sun was very very low, and slanting over the surface. This had the effect of highlighting the texture, but gently. I personally prefer the color reproduction that direct sunlight gives; not everyone does, though.

That's the thing about faithful digital representations of [most] traditional art, they don't exist no matter how hard you try -lol-

razimo In reply to starrynightxxi [2008-02-27 00:26:52 +0000 UTC]

Seriously! I mean, I could sling acrylic paint around and photograph and scan and create photoshop textues and custom brushes out the wazoo, and Still it would not look the same as paint! Well, I must admit I like that. I like both - traditional and digital media.

razimo In reply to marc21 [2007-11-21 01:11:16 +0000 UTC]

You like the background? Really?? That is very sweet of you! I mean, I adore it in person, but hate it in photos.. it looks so friggin' dry. But if I put a nice coat of gloss varnish on it, it'd be impossible to photograph.. blah! I worked very hard to capture the clean whiteness of the horse.. now, I need to see if I can paint a black one. THAT will be hard.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

marc21 In reply to razimo [2007-11-23 08:19:38 +0000 UTC]

butbut the reflections of the textures are what makes it special! it's supremely hard to capture a 3D feel on a 2D plane. hmm a black horse will be real elegant... the shadows might get tricky though...

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

razimo In reply to marc21 [2007-12-14 01:45:07 +0000 UTC]

Getting good darks - good precise darks, I should say - is proving pesty. The acrylics just start to look blobby and globby instead of translucent and glowing.. bah! And this is the argument I'm having trying to create a very dark brown horse, nowhere near black. Well, I suppose these little challenges are why we're artists, we ENJOY them. Pfeh...

Horse are usually a pain in the ass for lot of people but, geez, you've done an awsome job with this one. Its pose is very natural and wild, and I do like his head, seems very real but 'ghostly' at the same time.

I do love the hard strong textures in the background, they contrast perfectly with the accurate strokes in the horse. The colours are pretty cool too, having, again, an ethereal aura to the animal, like... don't know, like it is some kind of... spirit.

Very nice job, really.

I've been drawing horses forever. 'Bout time I got halfway good at it. It makes me feel like such a girl admitting that, but oh well. The truth hurts! I am utterly delighted that you like the textured background! I ADORE texture - I put it ruddy everywhere - but I'm not very good at really, truly making it work for a piece. (As in, making the texture work such that the piece couldn't be succesful without it. Anyway.. thank you very, very much! I appreciate the commentary; it makes me Very Happeh when an experiment comes off fairly well.

Loved with all that was left within me, 'til we tore in twooooo..

Man, people on dA have very strange awesome taste in music! I adore Aeroplane over the Sea.. that album is addictive... but it is severely strange. I used to think Radiohead was odd... nuh-uh. Not even close. Positively down-to-earth.

Otherwise - thank you! It's nice to paint horses again - it makes me feel like a silly girl, but there are worse ways to feel, no?

Next one will have less shirts on, promise. >:3

Erm, a dude, I mean.. not a horse. Horses are already naked.

Well, unless you put a shirt ON a horse, then you can promise that next time it will be a shirtless horse. xD

And plus, we all need to feel like silly girls sometimes. >w<

The colour at his feet makes me think he's some sort of horse of fire and spirit and melts the very rock beneath his hooves.

I'm weird. I'm so happy you put him up! Glowing white horse in a world of swirling darkness. He's beautiful! He's still up as my wallpaper.

And your art teacher was a total dork.

So awesome... I love the contrast between the bold, messy brush strokes of the background and the invisible brush stokes of the horse. Amazing pose, btw. Also, the red/pink shadow is very suggestive...

As for me, I like "King of Carrot Flowers Part 1" - best opening of a CD ever, right? - and "Communist Daughter." But, then again, I am a sucker for catchy songs. Isn't it a haunting album? I was really creeped out the first couple times I listen to it...

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

razimo In reply to rynling [2007-11-11 16:36:57 +0000 UTC]

.. do I even want to know what the shadow suggests to you? The bit of weirdness just.. well, it wanted to be like that! I can't explain it. Thank you very much!

"When you were young, you were the King of Carrot Flowers.." -- YES! Best CD opener over! *thinks for a moment* I can think of some good ones, too.... the first track on Want One (Rufus Wainwright) is extremely awesome, as is the first track of the immortal OK Computer (Radiohead, of course!)... but "The Kind og Carrot Flowers pt.1" is so completely unexpected! Haunting is the best one-word description I've yet heard of it; although 'ossessing; comes close. I am utterly compelled to listen to it, since I got it!

I am a texture addict. The best day I've ever had in Photoshop was when I figured out how to make a photo of a texture simulate a real one! I LOVE playing with texture in my real paintings, and for the longest time I could not sort out how to make my Photoshop paintings behave the same way.

Anyways.. thank you very much! (Man, 415 messages, holy cow do I have some catching up to do around here!)

Man! Y'see, my old art professor was of the VERY FIRM opinion that unless a painting was done, start-to-finish, in a single morning, it wasn't worth having worked on it; and if you REALLY wanted to impress her, you'd have spent that morning going back and forth between two paintings, finishing up both in the afternoon, then making good progress on a third before going home for the day. AUGH! I hated it! I like to fuss over my paintings! Anyways.. thank you very much!
