Description Packwood Lake, south of Mount Rainier in the beautiful state of Washington.

An easy going 9 mile hike, with enough mosquitoes to make you windmill your arms continuously.

As someone who has always relied on shallow depth of field, I am trying to learn to balance all of the many elements of a photo that is completely in focus. Would love to hear your feedback on the composition of this photo.

Thanks as always for looking

I find this photograph interesting, because we essentially have two focal points, in a way. You have the path that you're standing on, which leads to darkness, and takes up the lower right side. Then, you have the opposing bank, with glimpses of the mountainside, the trees, and what could potentially be a seriously amazing landscape. For me, there is quite a dichotomy between the two, especially as the right is shrouded in darkness, while the left is just about peaking with sunlight.

I almost feel like it would have been a better photograph to have rotated your position to the left, and focused more on the landscape itself, rather than including the path that leads to darkness. You could still maintain a large depth of field while focusing on that landscape, and it would have meant a more concentrated focus on what is more attractive.

That darkness is kind of like something we want to move away from, not walk towards, so it is a bit ironic. I think you have the balance nearly there, but it depends on how you approach it. Perhaps the camera could have moved more towards the left, perhaps you could have placed the camera on that wooden banister kind of thing, so that we are placed on a more equal footing. There are many different ways of going about it.

Thanks so much for the in-depth feedback!
I agree very much with everything you've said. I think the composition could use some work on this one, and perhaps it is leaning too far toward the darkness without enough of the light included. I actually have another shot from that day that I think may have been more successful, I think it will be my next to upload. Thanks as always for your fantastic comments!

Do they put artificial lanes into the water to prevent the driftwood to drift away? o.O

Regarding the composition: It's a nice trail picture to show what you saw and also show the viewer what kind of trail you were on. As a picture itself it doesn't work as well imho. The problem is that the eye doesn't know where to look. For me, the subject is the small island with the lovely touch of light and the mountains the background. The driftwood kind of leads toward it. However, the bridge leads the eye away from the subject into the dark nothingness of the forest in the right part of the picture. As said, a nice trail picture and I would have definitely made one similar to this when I would have stood in that place. I don't know the terrain but for a better composition of the scenery I would have place myself on the shore before the bridge starts - basically to the left of the bridge-entrance. Then I would have tried to get the driftwood to work as lead-in lines and frame it so the trees at the end of the bridge would be the right end of the frame, without the bridge being in the shot. Again, I don't know if that was all possible but that's how I imagine it. I hope this makes sense in your head and isn't too confusing.

As for the depth of field. For a single shot this is probably as good as it gets. The very edge of the bridge in the bottom-left corner is a tad out of focus but that is extremely close to the lens. The rest is sharp as a brand new knife.

I guess so? The poor person who put them in had to carry them for 5 miles to get there, haha.

Thanks for the great comment! I actually have one with the driftwood as a focal point that I like better myself, I'll have to upload it
