This is for you, Mom. If anyone else sees it and likes it, that's great. If anyone sees it and doesn't like it, they can screw off. This isn't for them. It's for you.

I have a tendency to be a royal grump sometimes (and when I say "grump," you know I really mean the impatient, hot-headed, temperamental, angry young man I've grown into, with whom you've shown a level of kindness, patience and love that can only be described as extraordinary). Despite all the times I've let my temper get the better of me, or taken out my frustrations on those I love (which really is the last thing I ever wanted to do), you've always been there to contain me, to hold back the beast, to love me and remind me that things aren't as bad as I might think they are.

We've had more than our fair share of trials and hardships. We've butted heads, argued, disagreed, misunderstood each other, and made each other cry. But we've always made up. No matter how bad things have gotten, we've always come around, gotten past it, kept moving forward. We've been through hell together, and for my part, the trip wouldn't have been as bearable without you.

These are the kinds of things I can't say. I have to sit and think to collect my thoughts and put all these words together. That's why I don't tell you "I love you" enough. But you really have no idea how much I love and respect you. I have no doubt that at any time you would have given your life for mine, from the moment you found out I was growing in your womb to the time you finish reading this. The English language falls short of words to describe what that means to me. I also have no doubt that I wouldn't be half the person I am today if it weren't for you. Thank you for believing in me and encouraging me to follow my dreams.
