The "male word" for chica is "chico" xDDDDDDD But sometimes in Colombia the girls call the chicos "niΓ±o(s)" (that is used for younger boys, like 10-11 or less), with male teenagers, ignoring their age. But the word you're looking for is chico.

Not here, the girls use it in a kind way. Example: "Ese niΓ±o es muy lindo!" that means "that boy is very cute!" and they use it like a cute reference XDDDDDD (often by the preppy girls).
But with the "little gangster" thing, it depends in the context you use it XDDDD. An example of that (and my favourite XD) is "Hola, marica!", that is "hi, f*g!" or "hi, queer!", "hi, sissy!" and sort XD. The last word is an insult, but in the local language (in Cali) it's more like "dude". So, if you're in Cali and someone calls you like that, he/she is not insulting you XD (also "marica" is used instead of "sh*t" when you see/hear/read something shocking sometimes XD).
