No you don't seem to struggle with light and shadows I really do

I just pick model and background with similar lighting then use a bit of dodge and burn,soft focus and change tonal values. Check out my first few manips they dont look anything like my later ones. you will get better and better the more you practice. Check out the tutorials on Da, there are some really good ones with links to images used.
