Description Ubuntu Lucid Light Field,
Wallpaper, made in GIMP.

I was looking at an Ubuntu site today (french) lol
and I came across a screenshot of someones desktop with a cool background, only it was in grey scale and tiny.

So I used "tineye.com" a reverse image search engine,
and found the original where it had come from.
It was called "vista light field"~

So I removed everything but the original pattern,
Merged my own gradient with it, played around a little,
and this is what I came out with. lol

I made a few different slight variations (5 of them),
and Kept the original, without any text/logos,
and created a .zip archive.

I think this is my favorite one Ive done so far,
So I wanted to share it.

I was really just making it for my own desktop,
but what fun is it to keep it to yourself if there's a chance someone else might also dig it. lol

So, in the file ~ is the background with no text/logos,
and 5 other minor variations on the text/logos,
(ie, one with white and orange logo, one with black logo,
2 with 'linux for human beings' in diff. spots. with text/logo.
One with white and red logo) .

I could have probably done more to make it better,
but I'm tired. (and pretty much a n00b) lol

Sorry it's only one size, for now.
It was a weird size originally, and I didnt change it....
yet.. lol

Well, hope someone else does 'digs it'. lol

Microsoft is OK with you using their Vista Light Field?

Looks cool though. If you want, I created a pattern that you could use to make this. [link]

lol, Sure, they seem to be ok with everyone else who uses it.
not even sure ive ever seen the original.
I didnt even know thats where it was from until quite a bit later.
I snagged the pattern myself from someones desktop screenshot of a wall they made,

But to be frank, I wouldn't much care what microsoft is 'ok' with.

Thanks , and thanks for the link.
Ill check it out.
anything special that needs to be done to get said effect?
or is it just the same pattern itself, made into a .pat file?

To make the distorted view, I used the Filters > Distorts > IWarp feature in the gimp. I used the GROW selection as well as the SHRINK selection. I added a blue outer glow to the dot layer, and did a few other trials and errors.

oh thank you man!
Ive been looking for a design/graphic like this for awhile,
but none that made me want it as much as this one. lol

what id really like though,
is to know how to make such designs on my own.... lol

in my head it doesnt seem like it would be tooo difficult,
but things often dont go as easy as I think they should/would be. lol

im happy you like it man.
thanks for the fav! <3

I think it was made in PS with the warp tool among other things. I wonder if the curve bend filter in GIMP could do a similar job. Worth a try.

I was thinking along the same lines...
But another option I thought of was to use Blender to create a 3D surface with a simple repeating color field reflected on it. I don't know if Blender can do something this complex though... worth a shot though.

Thanks for the tip. I'm pretty sure in the right hands Blender could do something similar to this.

ahh, good call,

after checking out the curve bend tool for a few,
i think it could definitely do a similar job!
thanks!

I hope you do to! lol

I played around a little last night with curve bend and Iwarp, but I need to get a better feel for how to manipulate the images with them.
It's kinda weird and confusing as to what to pull in what direction to make it do one thing or another. lol
(see, even saying it is confusing)lol

But I did see that those tools could definitely do this kind of thing.

Can;t wait to see if you give it a go! <3
