thank you for your comments.
well, all i did was basically lie on the ground so that the background was open shade. meaning there wasnt any sunshine in the background and was fairly dark. i then spot metered on the flower petals which were very bright with sunlight. so the flower was correctly exposed and the background was underxposed. i then pushed the background all the way to black to eliminate all the color.
