Story:
**WIP**
Kaela had seen the news months ago. Actually, thinking about it, it was probably about 2 months after she got Trench, her big black Sabino stallion. The Alfkak stud was hosting a mass event where you could train and compete a horse to win it. She had put it off to the side, knowing Trench was already going to be challenging enough to train. He was near impossible to work with, so the thought of training and bonding with an Alfie in three days was absurd.
So what was she doing now, staring as a huge bay mare lunged at them?
She had absolutely no clue.
Kaela had been contacted by a local stable she was familiar with about the event, as they were interested in getting their own Alfkak. Since the big black stallion was the talk of the Town back in Wyoming, everyone knew that the two sisters had recently imported an Alfkak. They wanted to know if she had any tips or tricks up her sleeves, as they had just booked a plane flight. Kaela offered them the small amount of knowledge she had accumulated from her eight weeks of experience and put it out of her mind.
Later that day, she had received an alert from the breed's webpage reminding everyone about the upcoming contest, which was revealed to be based on mythology. She had accidentally clicked the notification, bringing her to the webpage. A few of selected Alfkaks were displayed, ranging from chestnut mares to a loud palomino tovero stallion. She scrolled through the basic information on a whim, noting that there was a bareback race, an archery portion, and a chariot race. The unique and strange events caught her attention, but she clicked out of the tab. The farm was short on money-they couldn't afford to fly a horse overseas, not to mention the feed and vet bills for another horse.
But the event kept popping up in her brain. By the end of the week, she was sick of it. She was going to go to this stupid event and attempt the impossible. She wanted a mare, who could be a broodmare in the long run. Preferably with loud patterns and a more agreeable disposition then Trench. She looked at the finances of the farm. It was right, but if they got a good deal on their sales horses and dipped into the small amount of winnings they had, they could do it.
In the spirit of Roman mythology, on which the event was based, she decided to base her entries on Diana, or Artemis. She found a few old bedsheets, which she was able to cobble together some sort of shirt thing with, and found two pairs of styrofoam antlers at a craft store, which she painted gold. Alluding to the Moon part of Diana's life, she painted a moon on a old black helmet cover to wear during the archery and bareback race.
In addition, they somehow found a deal with a local stable transporting a horse overseas where they could bring along Trench to compete in the Cultural dressage event. Unfortunately itxr meant that Sophia couldn't come, but hopefully Kaela would be able to pull it off. For the risks they were taking, she had too.
So 2 months later, when she landed in Cyprus and rattled up to the site with a rented truck and trailer, she was highly apprehensive about the whole event. For starters, the grounds were packed and the sun was incredibly hot. She had gotten a bruised shoulder from a big palomino mare and had barely made it to the two stalls assigned to her. After successfully putting away the big stallion, who was oddly calm, she had met Lily Sanderson and Drake Fraiser from a stable in Wales. After exchanging numbers and promising to meet up later in the day, she had left to tour the remaining horses and pick out her mount for the next three days.
She had passed a couple of majestic temple-based stables when a bay Sabino and overo mare caught her eye, near the end of the Delta stable. She had piercing blue eyes and towered over the other horses, standing at least 18 hands, probably more. She was much taller than Trench, that was for sure. She had approached the mare, who hadn't immediately pinned her ears like Trench had the first several days she had the stallion. Feeding the bay an apple she had picked up from the ground, she instantly knew which horse was hers. Reading the ID tag on the stall, she had rushed to the registration tent and filled out the forms for the mare so she could claim her. The only thing they told her about was that the mare was particularly bad around stallions.
The big mare was gentle and affectionate, nosing Kaela constantly for treats. She had the perfect luxurious black mane and tail, and a flashy coat that gleamed with health. Kaela could just picture the mare dressed in the traditional golden halters, the very picture of the Alfkak breed. Kaela knew she had to introduce the mare to Trench so they could get used to each other for the chariot race.
Evidently it wasn't such a bright idea after all.
Now she stood panicking as the mare lunged at the stallion. Trench seemed utterly unphased at the whole deal as Kaela stumbled backwards and the attendant who had been leading the mare out rushed to catch her again. Trench stood his ground, more annoyed than scared as the mare screeched to a halt in front of him, snapping and rearing on her hind legs. The attendant finally caught up and grabbed the dangling lead rope, wheeling the mare around and away from Trench. The mare swished her tail angrily and squealed, desperate to be let back at the big stallion. Trench, uncharacteristically, was totally still at Kaela's side. *Maybe he's been given a mild sedative to calm him on the flight* Kaela thought to herself as the angry mare was walked away and put back in her stall. She sighed to herself.
"Maybe this whole thing wasn't such a great idea after all..."
