Homework for LASALLE College of the Arts: After weeks of brainstorming with the voice actors I am finally satisfied with the script. Here is the final storyboard for my animation major ... which will NEVER be finished because trying to animate 10 minutes by hand at 12 fps by one person will take it right out of you.

I remember having a lot of fun doing this back in collage for my film class.
What's your estimate on a rough reel for animation?

I'm keyframing each scene as I go along, and working each scene in a separate file and in the wrong order than the storyboard, so I can't really say how long it would take me. Unless I'm still not understanding your question.

Are you gonna do traditional (suuuuuch a pain but usually worth it in the end) or are you going Flash (much easier but I'm a complete scrub at it)?

I've been updating my Journal with progress on the animation, and my Youtube account already has one or two sketch-only scenes uploaded there. I use TVPaint 10 Pro.

A long. Long. Long. Time. Storyboards are nightmarish to do because I'm not just thinking about the images, but how many to draw to explain a certain scene, what happens where, etc. and then tidying them all up and fitting them with those little descriptions just takes forever. I usually wind up with splitting headaches by the time I'm done ...
And this is the sixth time I've drawn it.

hmmm this took on a huge chage from the last story board. All critical of the church (not really religious and dont care, but noticed how incredibly overt it is in this story board - even if it is agreeable) and what happened to the attack on Louis' hair? I loved that part. Of course, this feels a little more mature than the last board, the old one had that jaunty whimsy to it, this one is smart and witty.
(love the fact that he's the beggar though, that fits in much better).
Anyway - I cant wait to see this animated.

The previous storyboards all dealt with the characters as characters and lost the message. This version far better encapsulates what I want to say, which doesn't just criticize the Church alone, but all three factions.

Very cool, as always. I am a little sad that you decided to do away with Louis stepping over James. I just loved that visual of Louis and how freaking long his legs are, plus the dynamic (Louis likes to be on top in more ways than one?) Still, whatever you decide to create, I'm sure it'll be awesome! I'm sure I will love love love it, no matter what!

I watched the video on YouTube, and it's fantastic! All of the voices are perfectly suited to the characters, and I absolutely love Louis.

btw, I wasn't sure how the painting thing would go when I was simply reading it as the storyboard...but watching the animatic sold it completely! Very clever.

The storyboard is awesome, and while listening to the animatic you can imagine all the movements of the characters without each frame being added. All the VA are spot on in my opinion, from beginning to end I had a constant smile on my face. (Not to mention I couldn't stop laughing at Jame's "Caught with his pants down" scream that you guys incorporated from the pod-casts.)

This is so amazing! I love how you put up every step of the process up; it is really inspiring. Makes me want to pick up and learn how to go through this whole process as well.
In other news, I love the new ending, as well as the addition of Louis being the beggar at the start. Quick question, what prompted the removal of the priest not blessing Santiago/the gold? I'm just curious.

The priests designs were very straightforward before, showing that "Santiago = religion", but not that "religion = corrupt". Their designs and behaviour were all altered for this purpose, becoming more exaggerated to fit in with the rest of the cast and to show a real blood-sucking side to the Church. And given the sick, twisted things that the Conquistadors and the Spanish Inquisition did, I'm much happier with this now.

Ah! The animac was great! I just love the voice actors, they're doing a great job. And I see that you changed the ending and added some people. I like how you included the priest, inquisitor, and the monk showing that the Chruch is corrupted on so many levels and not just on the level of members such as Santiago. The character designs really convey that too, that little priest creeped me the heck out. And Santiago stealing from the "beggar" created the oppertunity for some witty quips I saw.
As for the ending changing, it was intresting how there really wasn't any fighting, it was more Louis working the situation to his advantage. It showed he can still get the job done without having to resort to violence which was kinda of cool to see a pirate doing. I am slightly disappointed that we aren't going to get any swash buckling scenes but I'm an action maniac haha. I also kinda thought Santiago was going to combust from getting a secondary kiss from such a heathen! (Who just got lipstick on his white gloves
