Yes, I know this goes against the "troll ancestors only wear black" but I felt like I needed to set him apart from everything else.
In my headcanon, The Sufferer wears a commoner's clothing. No sick armor or anything. Also, he didn't mean to become the leader of a revolution. It was kind of a mistake. He stood up for himself or another one of those with in the lower caste and spurred a movement. That's why he's not all gung-ho like the rebels behind him; he didn't want to be a leader. This theory of mine also goes with the whole possibility of the Ancestor's past being a kind of bizarro world with what's happening with the trolls in the present.
But yeah. Vectors are silly and backgrounds are hard.
Edit: BUT WAIT THERE'S MOREΒ
Here's the situation I think could have happened:
The Sufferer and another lowblood are out somewhere, maybe a pub drinking, and some highbloods start some trouble. At this point, The Sufferer is still hiding his blood color, wearing grey like Karkat. He gets in a scuffle with the highbloods trying to defend whoever it is he's with, and himself, and gets cut or sheds blood. The highbloods expose him, but he has a moment of braveness and makes a moving speech about abolishing the castes and rising up against the highbloods.
Being in a lowblooded area of town (??? fuck I don't know), this speech inspires a great number of lowbloods to stand up to the highbloods. They end up winning in a small fight against them, and The Sufferer is instantly crowned the leader of the revolution. He doesn't do much, since he never really wanted to be a leader anyway, but he is a great orator. Mostly pushed by those he inspired, he and his followers go about Alternia, trying to get others to rise up. As time passes, more and more join the revolt against the highbloods, but The Sufferer is always put on the front lines. This all climaxes at a battle against the grandest of highblood armies. In this fight, The Sufferer is killed, quite gruesomely, in front of his armies, and, without their leader, the lowbloods fall and the revolution fails.

Although the Sufferer's canon appearance has been revealed, I still love this headcanon to death.

Well, whatever he did, it was so dramatic that even his symbol was forbidden and considered equal to Satan's Number.
I hope we find out what he did that shook the highbloods so badly.
