Personality:// "This boy is such a sweetheart, he's a lover not a fighter. But he's terrified of being in total darkness, we're unsure why but get him a night-light and he might be alright."
From the moment we saw Makawe, standing half-obscured and utterly unobtrusive in Pen 3, we knew that we had found our Kaimanawa. Though initially a little shy, he doesn't seem to have an aggressive bone in his body and has shown himself to be an excellent snuggle-buddy. After only two days of patiently waiting for him to approach, he realized that humans were safe (and the providers of delicious treats!). Much to our (and the staff's) shock, the darling came right up to Avalyne and rested his head on her shoulder to chew on her hair the eve of their third day together. He is curious and willing, the perfect prospect for both our endurance program and a general riding horse.
We have noticed how nervous he becomes at night, and Avalyne has been camping out by the fence line with an assortment of lanterns and night lights to keep him comfortable. He's taken to lying opposite her, with his head through the gap in the fence while he dozes. Once he arrives home in Canada, we'll outfit his stall with similar fixtures.
He is still very flighty, but is gradually building trust with his new family. We're sure he'll be rather cross with us for taking him out of the nice, warm NZ summer and home to the Great White North, so it's best we bond now. Honestly we can't blame him. We don't want to leave either.
Finally, no one certain what happened to his tail- he must've caught himself as a foal since the break seems clean and well-healed. He doesn't seem to be bothered by it, and we have taken to nicknaming him 'bunny'. Ineloquent, perhaps, but adorable. He'll match our similarly stumpy-bum'd Riley.
