Praise we shall at some point in the Franchise that thereβs a Star Fox Fighter who does not wield a blaster/who does not have their own vehicle.

Krystal is one of my most-wanted characters in Smash Bros. after King K. Rool. I just really would like to see a Star Fox character who isn't a Fox derivative and she would be very unique as a staff fighter, something which Smash lacks (no, I wouldn't count Palutena). Unfortunately she was revealed as an assist trophy the very day of the Nintendo Direct, meaning along with Takamaru being an AT again, there goes two of my Top 5 Most Wanted already. At least being an AT is bigger role for her in Smash than in past games, but it still hurts.
Now Krystal's specials are pretty easy to assign because most people just go with abilities the staff had in the game, you included. Fire Blaster, Freeze Blast and Rocket Booster are all a must, and I'd definitely agree to allowing rapid fire and aimability to Fire Blaster because that would make it more interesting and also game accurate. Most people often make the down special the Ground Quake or the Forcefield, and I would have chosen the former since the latter is just a generic shield move. I remember when I saw this a few years back I was wondering how the heck the Sharpclaw Disguise move worked, and now that I've finally read it, I'm not to sure about it. Seems like it'd be a bit gimmicky and there doesn't seem like there'd be much reason to actually use it, but maybe that's just me. Lastly, Tricky Stampede seems like it could be devastating? Is it simply from one side of the stage to the other, or could you control it and run back and forth. Either way, I usually find Final Smashes to the be the weakest part of proposed Krystal movesets, but in your case, I think it's alright. Has another major character from Adventures represented. Another alternative I just thought of could be her riding a pterodactyl while having use of her staff, like in the opening of Adventures. By the way, Tricky was originally intended to be the same character as the one from Diddy Kong Racing back when the game was Dinosaur Planet, but once it became a Star Fox game, they changed that.
Krystal's special set isn't really a hard one to put together and overall I think you made the right choices (not sure about Sharpclaw Disguise though) and one of the few I've seen where the Final Smash makes sense. By the way, normally I don't comment on the art itself, but I have to say here it's pretty interesting how you drew Krystal here; she sort of has a space biker look to her.

The design here was based on her appearance in Assault. And I thought both dinosaurs were always supposed to be Tricky?
I really didn't want to include the earthquake because it would have made her moveset so boring.
She has ice, fire, quake, rocket jump...what actually makes her unique? Granted that is quite a broad combo - Ness has fire and lightning, Lucas ice and lightning, Zelda has fire and wind so I guess it would be a little interesting to have a character with so many different elements, but then Ness could have had ice and quake too but they went with a couple of techniques that were a little more indicative of the Mother series and a little more personal.
Maybe that's why I found Starfox Adventures so forgettable. Not necessarily bad, but it just had so many standard adventure game tropes it kind of felt like a watered down Zelda game with some Starfox bonus segments (I'm sure many people will disagree with me on that.)
I do think a staff based moveset would be fresh and welcome, I'd just like to see something more, something to really make Krystal stand out (I don't think I achieved that here, I was just so convinced that she would be in Brawl.)

I know it's the Assault design; was just saying the way you drew it made it look more biker-like. They were both supposed to be Tricky, but after the game became Star Fox Adventures they decided to make it a different Tricky from the one in Diddy Kong Racing.
It's kinda odd talking about the uniqueness of specials here given the discussion we just had about "bland" specials on the Meowth page and how not all specials need to be gimmicky, and that's kinda what I feel about Sharpclaw Disguise; there just doesn't really seem to be much of a reason to use it. Remember that the Ground Quake is a shockwave rather than an earth-element attack, which is a unique thing for a move in Smash (thought the hypothetical problem here is I suggested a shockwave for King K Rool's down special as well). I think Krystal doesn't need to be a gimmicky character because the staff moveset alone stands out from other fighters (sure beats another sworduser), plus even if she does use elemental specials it's not like they function the same as the likes of PK Fire and PK Freeze.
I feel a unique weapon makes up for a lack of gimmick. Like, if for example they added Hector (fat chance), he wouldn't need to have a gimmick simply because there's no axe-wielders in Smash.

I'm always glad to see support for Krystal to be in Smash, even if this was from 4 years ago. By the way, I love the art style you have for her and the other characters you've done, both the main drawing and the "special move" doodles to the side.

For reasons. Good reasons, mind you.
1. Another female rep to the roster.
2. Another Star Fox rep aside from Wolf whether he returns or not.
3. Falco and Wolf are semi-clones of Fox - many of their moves are unique, but their special moves are similar. Krystal's moveset, however, is completely unique.
I'm positive there are other good reasons out there, too.

1. Those fem candidates are mostly human, only other popular candidate I know that isn't human is Dixie Kong.
2. Nintendo/Sakurai would never ever think to have Andross depicted like that, despite how awesome it looks. He has only been seen in his floating head and hands form, not his full body. He's already an Assist Trophy, too.
3. See No. 2.

This is actually really genius! It feels almost real! I know that sounds strange given the contrast between your art style and the actual 3-D rendering, but it's rather the fact that you've only slightly tweaked a few characteristics (her expression and hair), and given her a fitting move-set with a comical yet BRUTALLY effective final Smash. THOSE, I think are the marks of a successful welcome to the Smash Bros franchise. Wonderfully done!

Haha, thanks very much!
Sadly, it seems as though almost all of my predictions were way off the mark.
It's a shame really, none of my most wanted characters came anywhere near playable!

I feel you. Barely anybody I wanted as a newcomer got into Smash 4. Only Robin and Bowser Jr, and even then they didn't quite turn out how I would have liked (especially Junior).

professorfandango In reply to MagcargoMan [2018-08-04 11:24:08 +0000 UTC]
The trouble is, with a game of this scope there are always going to be people who are happy about one thing and disappointed about another.
I can completely understand how a long time fan of Bowser Jr. might not be completely happy with his Smash appearance (perhaps wanting something more paintbrush themed and perhaps on foot) wheres I, as somebody who is a massive Koopalings fan, was never too fond of Junior and actually find him more interesting when permanently paired with the Clown Car, I actually really like what they did with him and he's one of my most used characters!

MagcargoMan In reply to professorfandango [2018-08-04 11:33:17 +0000 UTC]
It is a very interesting moveset, and definitely for a Mario character, but I really wanted him to be on-foot. It feels like I'm playing as the Clown Car and not Junior himself, and to be honest, I really dislike how he uses it in everything now (even Mario Tennis won't let him use his feet anymore). He was one of my original Top 5 Most Wanted, and I dropped him from the list after Rosalina was revealed because I didn't think we'd get another Mario newcomer after her, so that combined with the Clown Car approach sorta made it feel like I didn't get the character after all, as weird as that sounds.

Well, I suppose it is still technically "in development" but I'm pretty sure they'd have settled on the final roster months ago, before even starting to make it.
But you never know! Good luck!

JoedamovieGUY In reply to professorfandango [2014-03-22 23:29:04 +0000 UTC]
If that is the case, How come I don't see a new character or a veteran out on the roster each week? Also judging the current roster count it's currently less than half of Brawl's roster. If they released the game with this few characters the game will fail. Nintendo knows they need this game to work as the Nintendo WiiU is already in the toilet with fewer original games compared to their current competitiors!
Regardless, thanks for your luck.

I'm talking about the conceptualisation and development. Not all the characters are necessarily modelled, programmed and ready to go but they would almost certainly have finalised a roster list before beginning. Projects like this don't get made as they go along!
Of course it's possible that all the characters ARE ready, but there's a lot more to a game than that! Even small things like menus and stat displays require artworkers and programmers which is why the game won't be coming out any time soon.
But despite all this, it IS still possible for things to be added in late in development (although it's much more likely for something to be removed during this time) so any speculation is still entirely valid!

How about that? A bit of a surprise but I guess since she hasn't showed up in the "reboot/re-imagining/whatever" games, maybe they wanted to represent her first appearance, as is customary for many Smash appearances.

Perhaps they just thought it'd make the most sense for her to have that design if she was running about with the staff, thought I personally don't think that sort of thing matters in Smash.

I always thought since Fox uses her staff, she should use it the same way, but she'd be a lot more skilled, as it is hers. So making up new attacks for her staff isn't out of the question!
