Description They're balls... that glow...

Another project for 3D, this time the outlines of the project were structure and skin. The balls themselves were made of soap, wax, or ice, with a LED light and batteries to light them up. I didn't have enough batteries, or time to make them as bright as I'd have liked, and had some trouble with the wiring, as lights would go off and I couldn't fix them without taking the whole pile apart.

In retrospect, I would have liked the left side to be lit up a little more. Pity.

looks realy cool. but where does light come from. of cause the stones are glowing but the specular on top of some stone looks confusing. do you realy solved this with a photon emitting material and global illumination. maybe you can discribe your technique a little closer would be nice to know .

All the "stones" are hollow balls of either wax, or soap, with one solid ball of ice (can you spot it? ) I used balloons to make plaster molds, then coated the inside of the molds with the soap and wax, which left a small hole where the materials were poured into the mold. After letting them fully dry, I put an LED light that was wired to a battery (the package recommended two, which is why almost all of the lights are really dull)

Unfortunately , I'm also terrible at wiring, and used athletic tape to hook the wires up to the batteries, which created an odd flickering effect in a lot of the balls, which is kinda lost here haha.

As for the ball of ice, I just put an LED light with wires already attached to it into a water balloon and then froze it. Once it was frozen, I hooked up a battery. Simple!
