I must say, this is an amazing portrayal of Mello. He was one of my favourite Death Note characters and I do have a soft spot for him!
First of all, let me compliment your style - very nice! As a fan of Takeshi Obata's artwork, I can say that you actually stayed pretty close to his primal visualisation of Mello. I like that you used the mixture of realism and manga, yet it's not overdone with all the blending, so it doesn't look too polished-like-a-poster kind of drawing. Keep it up!
I like the mixture of soft and harsh colours, which creates a very nice visual contrast. Especially the hair - the dark lining of the strands makes it appear fuller, more realistic and much more detailed. It's nothing too complicated, but along with the dark background (which appears like a window with raindrops? Am I right?) it gives a nice visual 'pop out'.
Now for the most important bit - the anatomy. Although it's only a portrait, I think that Mello's shoulders should be just a tiny bit longer, since he's much older than Near but not as old as L, if you know what I'm getting at? It's only a minor thing, but it caught my eye. Also - the EYES. Oh my, do I like the way you shaded and constructed Mello's look. The eyes make him look much more mature and sophisticated and the shading adds up to the overall atmosphere of Death Note - gloomy, yet mysterious. I like that you didn't actually pointed out what he's looking at - it makes it even more interesting. The bright colour, like the hair, makes the eye's pop out and created a nice visual impact on the overall drawing.
