Description Project: Mirrored Screened Image

It's probably not done yet, I'm probably going to come back to this later tonight and decide to deepen the shadows and add some textures to give it a more gritty feel. But even still, I sat back after I finished this and all I could think was... holy shit, I actually created that.

--------------------
Edit: Went back in and darkened the shadows, lightened the highlights, and some textures. prolly not done yet, though

Good work with shadows and highlights, and the colour scheme creates the right atmosphere successfully.

man, nice work. I love the concept... I work in the metal shop but love being outdoors, I can definitely sympathize with this guy sometimes

Hehe, that's a nice way to think of it, I hadn't looked from that angle before

What angle were you intending it to be looked at?

I see it as a guy who is trapped working in the belly of some machine, touching the life he used to/wishes to have

I honestly can't find another way to look at it? do tell?

An inventor's assistant who has inadvertently stumbled upon his boss's latest project and is full of wonder and awe at the inexplicable scientific marvel before him. He's reaching out to touch the mirror's surface, just to confirm he really is seeing what he thinks he is. But, he wonders, is the mirror before him simply a window to the scene beyond, or is it something more...?

so essentially a big screen that takes the image of whoever stands in front of it and puts it in a better place?

kind of sad, when you think about it... that someone would need to invent something like that

PlaidTidings In reply to PhiliosophicWoodsman [2008-02-16 22:58:31 +0000 UTC]

LOL it could be that, or it could be a mirror that's been transformed into a window to other places, other worlds, other universes, or, better yet... it's a mirror that's been transformed into a portal to those other places, worlds and universes. He won't know which is the case until he touches it, and sees whether it's cold glass beneath his fingers, or something more miraculous.

It's a fantasy/sci-fi illustration, it's meant to be the opening to the story of an amazing and fantastic adventure.

hmm, that would be quite the invention... I doubt the inventor is going to be too happy when he finds out his assistant teleported into the next galaxy

would look interesting with ripples coming from the point where he touches the screen/teleporter... probably insanely difficult, especially with the reflection, but would be pretty cool

Now that's the idea!

Yea, showing the contact would be hard as hades... which is of course why I opted to show the moment just before he touches instead

haha good move

it would be pretty funny to do another one, with the inventor walking into the room looking for his assistant, looking into his invention, and seeing the kid just as he's running over one of those hills

Neat stuff! It looks like he's about to step into a fantasy world, like "A Wrinkle In Time", just walk out and go through another dimension full of odd happenings!

bowen13 [2007-08-31 16:40:58 +0000 UTC]

Is that like an alternate dimension portal?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

PlaidTidings In reply to bowen13 [2007-08-31 17:50:59 +0000 UTC]

Dunno. That's the joy of the steampunk genre, things don't necessarily need an explanation, or even a function.

Could be a dimensional portal or just your average teleporter... could be a dimensional peep-hole, or it could just be showing a panoramic view of a field nearby... or it could just be a broken mirror

This is great, the composition is really good, and you caught the reflection perfectly. Some more texture and contrast would make this 'pop' really well, and make it even more of an excellent picture

(You can get a 'painterly' look in Photoshop too, just stay away from the airbrush and play around a bit... Painter is easier though, for that sort of thing)

so you had to draw a character from two different angles in the same position?

PlaidTidings In reply to almightybob42 [2007-05-02 20:13:46 +0000 UTC]

I had to draw something being reflected, as in a mirrored image.

Wow, this looks incredible! I really like the tones in the boiler room setting. I think that once you add in those textures and stuff the heat will really pop and the world on the other side of the mirror will glow even more. This is an awesome concept too...great work!

Holy shit is right! Your work is taking on new dimensions since you are using the computer more. I'm partial to brush strokes but I love this work--can't wait to see it when you finally finish it.

I like the texture of paint better too, which means I need to work in Corel Painter rather than Photoshop. Like the names suggest, Painter is for painting, where photoshop is primarily for photomanipulation
