Description
25 aircraft delivered, including one partially completed airframe for spare parts and 15 assembled locally by Philippine Aerospace Development Corporation in the 1990s, they were designed to replace the aging T-33 fleet. Since the 1990s, the Philippine Air Force (PAF) has been using its S-211 fleet both as a trainer and in offensive operations via secondary attack capability. These were re-designated as AS-211s and nicknamed as "Warriors".
These aircraft were also fitted with a belly-mounted gun pod while some are underwing which was designed, developed and manufactured by Philippine company Aerotech Industries Philippines, Inc. (AIPI). Each gun pod is equipped with an M3 .50 cal machine gun, an automatic charger and approximately 240 rounds of .50 cal ammunition or an M60 GPMG underwing gunpods.
S-211 often saw action in close air support missions, particularly during recent ongoing counter insurgency operations in Mindanao, however; some S-211s also experienced accidents 4 times, all are related training exercises. Currently, more than 18 S-211s were still in active service with the Philippine Air Force along with the newer KAI T-50's of the 105th Training Squadron of the 5th Fighter Wing.
