I should probably write this when I'm in a better mood, but I really want to get this out of the pile of things I need to get done. This is done from a kit I special-ordered from Japan that came with all the supplies, including the mannequin. This is the seventh of the five-inch-tall miniature bead dresses I've done from kits. This is the second fastest dress in the "5-inch" tall dresses. The only one faster currently is the Pink Mermaid by 30 minutes. It is a cute dress for an ocean/beach theme.

This is the second of the short dress patterns. I've made two mistakes on this dress and it's driving me slightly insane. It's not so much the mistakes themselves - they're rather minor (only color problems), but by the time I noticed them it would've taken me an overly consuming amount of time to cut all my work back to fix them. You may not notice them or want to be aware of them, so I won't point them out specifically here in the description. If you would like to know feel free to ask me. I don't deny that they're there (I am quite ashamed of it really) but everyone I've asked is either too polite to tell me it's obvious or sincerely don't notice the mistakes. I will be re-doing this pattern at a later date with some changes. Future variations on this dress can be longer, have a different stripe pattern, and could have a slightly changed design around the bodice.

Dress uses glass seed beads in size 11 (blue, dark blue, and pearly white) and size 15 (blue and pearly white). Why on earth the pattern decided at the end "hey, let's just change the shade of blue" to finish I don't think I'll ever quite understand. I've tried to justify it by saying it's trying to create a fake shadow or perhaps allude to some sort of underskirt... but honestly I haven't a clue. The same goes for the hat's coloring. It uses size 11 (pearly white, yellow) and size 15 (pearly white, blue). Why yellow? Seriously? It appears nowhere else on the dress's pattern. The dress uses Japanese One G nylon in blue and the hat uses it in white. Uses brick and herringbone stitches, the hat just uses herringbone.

The bow on the hat is blue ribbon with no particular design. The instructions for it in the pattern were extremely vague and I even went searching online to try and find other resources to figure it out. Since I had to tie the bow freehand (as in, not onto any object such as a hairclip) most of the instructions I found were also unhelpful. I did find out how to tie miniature ribbons using a fork but unfortunately the result was quite twisted and/or messy looking and I really needed the bow to be consistent. The outcome is that the bow doesn't look at intended, which was the bow with more ribbon around the center. I tried. Ugh, how I tried, I ended up wasting a lot of my ribbon tying it over and over again with my attempts. In the end I just took the instructions from the Dusty Rose dress and tied a plastic bead onto the center. I think it's a 3mm bead but it came off an old broken hairband so I'm not really sure. The hat is particularly stiff and it doesn't flop very well like a sun hat should. The mannequin/form is also not exactly equipped to display it over the dress. Future variations could have it without the ribbon and with sensible colors.

Small edit now that I'm feeling better:
The skirt on this dress (as well as the Dusty Rose) is herringbone down with those lines between. It gives it sort of a quilted look to me? Like.. it's puffy.. in all the right places. While I still don't like the different shade of blue underneath I do like how it pulls the skirt together and makes it really seem like a wearable dress. And I do agree with CatsWire , a yellow ribbon on the dress would've pulled the color from the hat and made it nicer.

Color Total: 3 (Hat: 3)
Bead Sizes: 2 (Hat: 3)
Bonus: Ribbon!
Size: 4 inches tall, 1 inch waist, 1 1/4 inch bust, 2 1/2 inches hem (Hat: 3/4 x 2 inches)
Time: 14 1/2 hours, 2 1/2 Hat, 17 Total
I can only place six thumbnails per deviation so as the short dresses continue fewer long dresses will be featured.

I LOVE this outfit! Can I wear it? XD Maybe just my finger haha. It's very pretty though. I like how the yellow complements the blue. Reminds me of spring and summer for sure!

*Correction: this dress doesn't have sleeves but it does have a necklace/neck line that would allow it.

Haha yes, that neck line is just gorgeous! So do you keep each dress and display them?

Thank you!

These first ten I will be keeping as sample pieces, yes. They're like my learning blocks, I don't really consider them clean enough for sale. I have one exception of these tall dresses [link] that was sent out as a gift. Otherwise since these are done with the kits they're staying with me, and I'll create more from the patterns with my own beads.

Wow, I'm so impressed that they are the "firsts" of your collection. Usually it's pretty noticeable when someone is just starting out in a craft. Did you bead other types of things before?

Thank you lots! ^_^ I beaded smaller dresses, a few miscellaneous 3D objects (like a few flowers, a couple of present boxes), but mostly just the flat beadies that are usually done with, like, perler beads, I suppose? Like the keychain animals. I've taken most of them out of my gallery at this point, not because the work was bad, but because my photography skills were dreadful. Here's some of the samples still up, if you dive into the back sections of my gallery there's a few more to see. [link] [link]

Ooo ok. Obviously I didn't dig hard enough through your gallery! I call them 2D animals since some ppl call mine 3D animals. You're right, the work is definitely not bad! My photography skills were terrible too. I THINK I've improved over the years, but thank goodness for editing software!

That's a perfect name for them, yes! And thank you again! I have to assume you've improved since your photos are so clean and crisp you really show all your details so nice!

Thank you much! This dress has sleeves so I may be able to get away making it without the dress form for your fingers to wear. I'm glad you like the yellow! I probably would've gone more cool colors myself but it does bring out that cheery feelings of warmer weather.

Mistakes happen. I almost never go back and take them out; what I'll do it break the offending bead with pliers and weave a new one in its place. Works pretty well, much less time consuming.

Holy, cow. This is amazing and beautiful. May I request to know what name the kit is under? Looking at this makes me wish to try my hand and patience once I get started with a bit of doll-making

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

pinkythepink In reply to Skyelark [2013-01-25 02:45:52 +0000 UTC]

Thank you very much.

The name of the kit is mostly Japanese. The English portion says "Dress series" (and this is the second set of five), and the only other English portion is "Resort dress at halter neck and garden hat". Not very helpful, I know. It took me a long time to track them down myself. I could note you the website I purchased them from but it's also entirely in Japanese with some English translation. They don't accept PayPal and ship directly from Japan.

Oh wow. Sounds like a very complicated process for such a darling little dress. I really wish there were more translators or in-between markets out there. I mean...the dollfie community, the miniatures community, and so on absolutely love so many of these Japanese made kits and toys and hobbies! And I'm fairly certain they enjoy some of the things we make as well in such veins. There's just so little over-lap of help. I would still love to look at the link if you've got it, though!

It is! I've worked very hard to get my hands on them. I'll note you the link, give me a heads up if you figure anything else out, and if you do get to making them I'd love to see them!
