Mr. Enter’s latest review on Buzz on Maggie brought up points on designing an anthropomorphic Bug character. He stated that there has to be some element of humanity to an insectoid character, lest they fall into the uncanny valley.

Pheromosa is a Bug/Fighting Type that does exactly as Mr. Enter stated. It’s one of the more humanoid Ultra Beasts, with eyes that look painted on. Familiar, but... off. Pheromosa is based on a cockroach, which is a bug on par with flies in repulsiveness. However, Pheromosa is unconventionally beautiful and is described to be germophobic; the latter is true to real-life roaches because they groom themselves constantly and hate being touched. Yes, roaches find humans gross more than vice versa.

Pheromosa is not only visually appealing, but also formidable in battle. Its super speed is its greatest asset, and also fitting with a roach’s speed in proportion to their size. (In fact, Pheromosa would actually be slower than the real cockroach.) Pheromosa also has powerful offenses for its rail-thin figure, with an Attack stat only 2 points less than its buff counterpart Buzzwole. To compensate, Pheromosa is frail and cannot take a hit, especially from Flying attacks.

Pheromosa is just one example on how a gross Bug can be made into an appealing character. Going back to Buzz on Maggie, Maggie Pesky may have her personality flaws, but she does have a cute design.
