St. Patrick's Day observes the death of Saint Patrick, the patron saint of Ireland. He was born in Roman Britain, and at age 16 he was kidnapped and brought to Ireland as a slave. He escaped, but returned to convert the Irish to Christianity. Legends say that he explained the Holy Trinity from shamrock leaves; the four-leaf clover is a rare variant that is said to bring luck to the finder. People celebrate St. Patrick's Day with food, music, dancing, parades, and wearing green; the cultural context of the holiday does get lost with the increased commercialism and criticisms have sprung from stereotypes.Happy St. Patrick's Day!
