Description This big fella is a Galopagus (sp?) Tortoise who lives at the St. Louis Zoo. Nettie and I took a walk through Forest Park and capped it off with a visit to the zoo. I haven't had ANYTHING to photograph recently so it was really nice to get out for a while.

I guess I bored him because in the middle of his portrait session he let out a huge yawn. I love his "teeth."

To travel light I took the D40 and 18-200mm lens instead of one of the "big guns." Every time I use it I find I like it more and more.

Camera: Nikon D40
Lens: 18-200mm f/3.5-5.6
File: NEF (RAW)

This is one of my favorite animals ever! I love how you got a shot with its mouth open. Such a great pose, really. Good job!

Never credit skill what you can attribute to dumb-luck. Seriously, though, I was lucky to catch him (her?) in a yawn and just knew that was a keeper. Actually, I had to shoot through a wire mesh to get the shot, but fortunately it didn't really appear in the final image thanks to a long zoom and infinity focus.

That's true, that's true. Maybe it's mostly luck and a tad skill. My dad sometimes shoots through wire meshes, so I know the hassles. And I'm happy that it didn't appear in the final image! For then I probably wouldn't have seen it.
