Most people I know hate pigeons just because they're dirty urban animals. Even though they're criminally adorable and goofy, just don't extensively touch them and your'e fine.

Same, the whole disease spreading thing is quite overrated because you'll only get sick if they shit on your food, mouth or you decide to lick one. Just wash your hand if you've touched one.
I've always grown up with them up close (my great-grandfather was a pigeon-fancier) so I find them really awesome animals.
