Description

Centurion Armor is a type of heavy exoskeleton used by the Space Marine Legions. These suits of thick armor turn the wearer into a walking tank, capable of delivering enormous firepower. The Centurion STC design, named after the Space Marine leaders of old, was discovered during the late 31st millennium. After being sanctioned by the Adeptus Mechanicum, the suits found their way into every Space Marine Legion.

Pilot Training

Unlike Terminator armor, the Centurion Warsuit is a powered exoskeleton. It does not work with Space Marine's Black Carapace. Space marines instead wear the Centurion Warsuit over Power Armour.

Space Marines pilot Centurions after tank and aircraft training. Centurion pilots are not Legion veterans but Devastator and Assault units. Some Legions, such as the Imperial Fists and Steel Wardens, identify potential warsuit pilots earlier than others.

Learning to pilot a Centurion requires intense focus, even for space marines. They engage in simulations, tactical drills, and endurance assessments. To ensure that he can manage such a complicated device in case of an aggressive assault.

Role

Legions used centurions as line breakers and besiegers in battle. This is true for Legions that favored hammer-blow assaults like the 4th, 7th,10th,18th, and 14th Legions.

Centurion Warsuits fall under two categories: Devastator and Assault.

Devastator Centurions are ideal for missions with high firepower requirements. This includes siege warfare or confined quarters. Their only weakness is their lack of speed; fast-moving opponents outrun them. They besiege enemy positions. The Legions use Devastator Centurions as mobile firebases to reinforce the advancing battle line.

Centurion Devastators typically have twin Heavy Bolters. They can also be outfitted with twin Lascannons or Grav-Cannons. Centurion Devastators can also be equipped with chest-mounted Hurricane Bolters or Missile Launchers.

Assault Centurions are deployed for close-range assault operations. These are the Chapter’s foremost close combat experts. These squads are focused on advancing in on the enemy and destroying them face-to-face. Upon a breakthrough by the Assault Centurions, Tactical Marine units will follow it to secure the area after the breach has been achieved.

Assault Centurions are armed with two Siege Drills. They can also be equipped with Flamers or Meltaguns. In addition, they have a chest-mounted Hurricane Bolter or Ironclad Assault Launcher.

Regardless of the type, a sergeant leads squads of two to five Centurions. Each Legion chapter has different numbers of Centurion squads.  In the 11th Legions order of battle, each grand company has six centurions squads, three of both types.  With between 180 to 360 in a chapter.
