Description
So it's National Black Cat Appreciation Day and I thought on doing a fanart piece on this show called Mumfie. So what's it about? Well, it's a series of books by Katharine Tozer about this little elephant that goes on adventures made in the mid to late 1930s. There was a show in the 1970s, but the one people might know more is the 90s cartoon created by Britt Allcroft after the success of Thomas and Friends. Unlike Thomas, Britt had read the Mumfie stories as a child and wanted to bring the character to life.
So how was I familiar with this show? Well, like Shining Time Station and the 1997 reboot of Captain Kangaroo, I remember seeing some bits of the show from the Mister Moose spinoff on Fox Family (ow Freeform) and later Storytime with Thomas, but I only remember one episode as I accidentally recorded an episode of "Storytime with Thomas", which turned out a good thing as that's consider lost media. My parents would buy a tape on the movie, which is actually a recut of the pilot season with some scenes and songs cut. The reason I said pilot season is because it builds up on what characters would become main staples in the rest of the show. I watch the movie from time to time, and would later watch some of the episodes on Netflix after Britt Allcroft released some of it, but then that was taken down sometime afterwards so I never got to see the rest of the show. I did some fanart in the past, but I only did a few pieces here and there.
In the movie, Mumfie wanted an adventure so he goes off in the world and meets a talking scarecrow and a flying pig named Pinkey. The pig tells the two that she used to live on a island with her mother, but then danger happened that the island was covered in darkness and both pigs were separated. Mumfie, Scarecrow and Pinkey decided to head to the island and found out what is going on, and found out that rules have been placed that you can't have any fun. Pinkey and Scarecrow found out that the island used to be run by the Queen of Nights and it was a great place until her secretary wanted to take it over, and they promised to help her when they can find her trinket that can stop the villain. Along the way, Mumfe and his friends met other people during the adventure. If I compare it to anything, it's basically Alice in Wonderland and Wizard of Oz. And speaking of which, this leads into this character simply called the Cat. She is basically the one who drives the plot for Mumfie as she was the one who lead the two to Pinkey. At first you think she'll be the Cheshire Cat where she kinda gives some trouble to Mumfie (especially if you saw he 1951 Alice movie), but it's later revealed that she is working with the Queen and wants things back to how things were before the Secretary took over. I also though as a kid that she was the Queen (since there was a scene where the Queen magically vanishes and the Cat shows up a few seconds later), but the ending scenes shows they are separate characters.
