Description
Ft Graham barracks, Lake Whitney, TX
After Texas became the 28th state to join to US in 1845, the US Army set up a number of Forts throughout the sparsely populated territory to protect the newly emerging frontier settlements. Ft Graham was one of these forts. It was established in 1949. The fort was abandoned in 1853, however, the surrounding town of Fort Graham continued to grow and thrive into the 1880s. In 1879, the railroad established the town of Whitney about 8 miles south of the fort, starting a migration of residents to the new town and out of Fort Graham. In 1936 the stone barracks building was restored as part of the the Texas Centennial, but after the Brazos river was damned to create Lake Whitney, the building suffered from regular flooding. It was moved to higher ground, where it now sits, in the 1980s. A park existed at the site, has now been closed and this building, with only a stone marker in front to identify it's purpose, is now abandoned and overgrown.
