Description Some more of my OCs I thought up ages ago - but this time not from the stone age for once.
This are Sigmund and Ines, two characters from a series of short stories I wrote/am in the process of writing set in 12th/13th century Austria. They are the Duke and Duchess of the country then called "Ostarrichi" and under the rule of the Babenbergs (the lesser known predecessors of the Habsburgs).

As for the designes: Since contemporary depictions of any Babenberg rulers are pretty much non existent I did take a lot of inspiration from 15th century depictions and also gave them the crowns later worn by members of the Habsburg Dynasty. What is correct though is the color scheme since red-white-red were the austrian colors even back then and the contemporary historian Jan der Enikel describes the garb of Duke Friedrich in 1233 as "scarlet with a stripe as white as a swan".

Recently I had (best know for her amazing Disney drawings) draw an historically accurate version of these two. And I was pleasently surprised to see that my original design was not that far off. fav.me/dcbuwib :thumb745511699:

Some character information:
Sigmund is the cousin of Leopold V and took over Medieval Austria in 1194.
As a ruler he is very strict and dutiful. His byname is conveniently "the Just", and while he can be cruel and ruthless at times, he would never be unfair or let his people down. His subjects love, respect and fear him at the same time. His great strength are his skills as a diplomat and orator, he is excellent at negotiating however tends to take his time with important decisions. He is generally calm and rational and tends to be very self-critical in political matters. He often worries too much.
In Private he is known to have a great (if sometimes strange) sense of Humor. He is an excellent Archer and shows a great interest in the sport, speaks fluent Latin and admires everything ancient roman.

Sigmund is married to Ines, a Bavarian Princess and the niece of King Richard of England - one of the reasons he was send to supervise the kidnapped King at DΓΌrnstein Castle (where he spend most of the time playing chess with Richard - and loosing every single match)
As duchess Ines is very gentle and reasonable and thus very popular with her people. She can remain calm under pressure and has a great talent at resolving conflicts though she tends not to interfere in political matters and rather act as a person of identification of the people. Sometimes she tries to hard to see the good in people. She is deeply in love with her husband and tends to overlook that he does not fully return her affection. Ines is usually admired by all the Minnesingers and especially Walther von der Vogelweide seems to be in love with her.

It's really neat to learn more about these two characters!Β  Are these fictionalized versions of real historical figures, or are they totally your own creation?

Thank you!

They are entirely my own creation. Altough I did embed them into a historical family tree. I really should get down to writing more of the stories, maybe I will post some on here as well. I did write a whole biography for Sigmund some time back. And of course there are still more characters I created for the setting. For example: Sigmund and Ines have three children, Leopold a scientist, Adalbert and Ida. Adalbert married a Byzantine princess and their sonΒ  Konstaltin got his own subplot set right at the end of the Babenberg reign. With him I tried to incorporate more of the concept of the medieval city rather than the court setting that dominated the earlier stories. After his father is killed at the battle of the Leitha in 1246 he gets striped of his titles for being on the wrong side in the ensuing war of succession. He eventually settles with becoming a municipal judge. (And his design definitely is too much 1350s rather than 1250s)
