I rewatched the movie, "Frankenstein Unbound", with John Hurt and imagined it was him as The War Doctor. Β The character was also a time traveler in the movie.

That would have been around the time he stared a minor role in "A Man For All Seasons" as Cromwell's assistant (1966), at the time Troughton was tooting along. Having watched the behind the scenes interviews from that period, I very much doubt Variety Lambert and her top subordinates were interested in a particularly young Doctor, and Hurt was too busy with other movies to try to compete with Tom Baker, if it ever crossed his mind to audition at all. By the time Baker quit, ALIENS had pretty much cemented Hurt's status as a Hollywood icon, and as far as I know, made no more films in England for the remainder of the eighties.

Now this just makes me wish that John Hurt had played The Doctor when he was younger.Β

John Hurt always had a really old look to him. I think it's the eyes. It fits the War Doctor's character. It would have been interesting to see him play the Doctor back when he was younger.

Amazing art. As a fan Who and it's mythology...the idea of a young John Hurt Doctor slaying Daleks during the Time War gives me goosebumps. In a way it's more epic cause we'll never see it (most likely).Β

Wow! Cool. It's almost creepy how young he was, then how long the war must have lasted.

Nice work.
I do wonder if there will be any comic or audio stories featuring the War Doctor in his early days.
