Description The French regiments under the Ancien Régime constituted the main component of what was already called at the time the French Army or the "Armies of the King of France". They were named after their owners and then the names of their province or recruiting city.

Like brigades today, each regiment had its specialty (infantry, cavalry, etc.) and was called upon to serve on the battlefields according to military requirements. As with the Navy, every Frenchman had the right to enlist, but the regimental command offices and high ranks were reserved for the military nobility (sword nobility) and inaccessible to the third state.

In the territorial organization of the Ancien Régime, each regiment was also responsible for the security of its province. It was then placed under the authority of a military government.
