It's been years since Sam has seen his closest friend. Over ten, in fact. This person was the only person Sam has ever loved. What kind of love? Sam couldn't answer that. Platonic, romantic, familial, it was love. More love than they'd ever felt for their parents.
They'd probably be confused as to why Sam was joining Team Zephyr. After all, he loved Pokemon with all his heart and would do anything to help even a random one he found on the street. Sam isn't his friend, though. His friend didn't see his lonely nights in Castelia City, parents not coming home for days on end. Sam would have to find his own way in life. It just so happened that, back then, they'd get involved with what most would consider a 'bad crowd'. But they gave Sam a home. Friends. A reason to keep going. That's more than Sam could have asked for after his friend moved away.
But even that wasn't meant to last. They'd been arrested, along with their new friends, and was the only one who was bailed out of jail. He supposes he should've been happy to be free, but he was left aimless instead. So he took the first ship out of the city, and it happened to lead to Issho. First thing he heard upon disembarking was how crime was starting to become an issue again in certain parts of the region. So they sought out what they were familiar with. Sure, he doesn't agree with everything Zephyr does, but it reminds him of times long past. In the absence of his friend, that's good enough for him.

took me a while to figure out how exactly to word/portray sam's willingness to be in a group he doesn't fully align with, but i'm satisfied with what i've got for now!
