That said, I confess I've never seen the show and I've heard that L dies. There's also this jib jab about "Mu" but I believe in an afterlife & would like to think L lives on in the afterlife. Besides, if a mystical plane of death-monsters & a magical death-dealing notebook can exist why not a regular afterlife for people? At least the main villain gets defeated. I've read about the show on websites & stuff.
That said, L & Syd Barrett in his Madcap phase are practically the same guy! They both love sweets, are messy recluses, look the same, strange & quirky, kinda pervy in a cute way, really cute, poor sleeping habits, a bit mental, mysterious...heck L's crouching echoes some photos on Syd's The Madcap Laughs photo shoot.
