Description Behold! The first bird painting to be submitted since last October. It's been far too long. This was finished between other scheming and just had to come out. It was a less than perfect excuse to get some painting done, but there it is all the same.

This is actually a metaphorical/symbolic self portrait, to be honest, and I choose the mockingbird to represent myself for a number of reasons. Not the least of these is my ability to "mimic" through observation of my influences and adding bits to my own "style", and reflecting the world as I myself see it, all the while making a fair amount of noise, ha. I take this thought on mimicry a step further and wonder if the mockingbird has its own inner identity. Who is the mockingbird, really, under its varied and conflicting songs? I often ask this question of myself! In this painting, the mockingbird's eyes seem to be cloudy blue instead of bright gold; and its wings and tail are insubstantial, two dimensional. The bird also seems to be falling more than flying, and one wonders if it may correct its path at some point on the way down!

The bird holds a heavy silver key, spotted with rust from misuse, a weight that drags the bird down with it, though the bird refuses to let go. It could use this key, this ability, if it knew where to find the proper door. But where to begin looking?

Just my feelings on what I'm doing lately making their way into my work. Perhaps the sentiment may change someday when I can properly apply myself. >.< You'll find a similarly themed painting here:

This painting also sort of pays homage to some of my earlier artistic influences (from when I was a young child, honestly): John James Audubon, for one, and I've had a strong admiration of Asian art for a very long time. To be truthful, I'd never acknowledged it had slipped into my work until told by others more recently. Strange how these things work!

I'll willingly accept any critique you can give, but if you've just got comments/questions, that's fine, too.

14 ¼" x 7" (36 x 17 ¾ cm, roughly). Mixed media on fiberboard: acrylic, watercolor, gouache, acrylic sepia ink.

Amazing colours and concept, I also love the background! What did you use to get that marble structure to it, acrylic paints?

Thank you! I did the top first with simple watercolor washes, and was uncertain where I was going with it. Of course, the white acrylic and gouache really changed that, it's probably one of my favorite parts of the painting.

I've had this sitting on front space in my message centre for a while now... not knowing what to comment, but wanting to comment nontheless.
First thing to say: the mockingbird is not a bird I'm familiar with. I don't think it's around in Europe or at least not that important for european culture. That said, I should really go and read some of the classic american books/stories... Which certainly is something I need to do before really understanding this picture. So... I won't comment on that aspect any more than I already did. (Could you give me an author to read, though? I have to start somewhere and I'm lost... too many books!)
Second thing: if that bird flies in any way similar to a magpie, I'm not worried about it landing at all. Seriously, some birds can pull of incredible stuff!

pallanoph In reply to Narkya [2010-05-08 21:13:57 +0000 UTC]

Oh, I certainly know how that feels... Unfortunately I only seem to be able to write replies these days. Oh dear...

That does make sense: Mockingbirds are native to the Americas (both north and south!) and the Northern Mockingbird depicted here is the only one regularly found in the States. Granted, their range does not extend to where I am living now, but you could see them further south where I grew up, every now and again. A lot of people feel that mockingbirds symbolize a sort of harmless innocence. Of course, they can still be quite obnoxious!

And speaking of literature... I actually have something to say in that respect. One of my favorite novels from when I was a teen is Harper Lee's "To Kill a Mockingbird". She often uses the metaphor of a mockingbird in regards to some of the book's innocent and misunderstood characters. It's considered a classic here. In fact, Wiki has a decent page about the novel: [link] Aside from that, I'm not certain of any literature that mentions the symbolism of a mockingbird. My own symbolism is based mostly on the bird's behavior.

Luckily, Mockingbirds are fairly agile... Perhaps I shouldn't be terribly concerned!

Narkya In reply to pallanoph [2010-05-09 08:55:29 +0000 UTC]

Now that makes sense, you are right. I'll have to read more about those birds and I will try to find that book in the library.

*I think the bird would rather let go of the key, land and pick the key back up if the ground came to close. Birds aren't stupid enough to commit suicide.*

Your painting makes me sad instantly. I don't like dead birds at all. Living birds make me feel alive, dead birds make me feel dreadful.
I like what you write about the bird that he may just change directions again! Great painting.

pallanoph In reply to Jupifang [2010-05-08 20:57:34 +0000 UTC]

Oh, don't you worry... this bird is alive. It just doesn't know where to go, or how to get there. Perhaps it will find the motivation to properly fly again!

Thank you!

I really like your bird's paintings, they're incredible! And here, on dA I rarely see such nice birds art, so thank you very much for such a treat.
As for the painting itself, I'm truly captured by eyes. They're something special. Also, the key looks very nice! It impossible not to mention colours, they're delicious, so calming yet alarming at the same time xD I don't know how it's possible, but it's true xD
Ah well, so many words, sorry~ But once again, work is brilliant

Oh, I completely agree: dA could use more bird art overall.

I was so worried about that eye! It's hard to make eyes look alive and yet reflective, especially if they're blue or grey! But I'm very glad to hear you like it.

Thank you! (And don't worry, I love reading your comments. )
