well as I understand it, an HDR is several photos of the same thing, with different settings, merged together to make the image more interesting than any one of them alone would be.

however, that really needs a tripod and patience, neither of which I normally have with me

so in this case I took one (really dark photo).
I selected the foreground in photoshop and "autolevelled" it. then I selected the background and auto-levelled that seperately. (you have to do some seperate fiddling with the border between the two, but that's the gist of it )
