I notice that you don't respond to panting and pawing from your female andmirers (at least not from what I've seen). I shall refrain from such embarrassing acts.

Interesting thing to notice. :j

I don't think I'm consciously doing that; lately I've been pretty busy- I have oddles of ol' poetry comments I'm anxious to reply to and the like, but I haven't done so yet. Generally I'll reply to something if I see it and there's immediately something I want to say; otherwise it just gets left there 'til much later.

I can only think of like.. maybe two comments max that might fit that description anyway, that I haven't responded to- maybe I'm missing them. They didn't jump out as me as being all that reply-to-able, is all--

I mean, what do you say?
'legend. sound.'
'thanks, I made me myself.'
'you misspelled sex0r.'
'thou admirest with a most gustoful steen, m'lady.'
'fengfeng.'

..

In retrospect, it may be better that I keep my interaction with people to a minimum, anyway. :j

How DO you respond to that? What do you say? "Why thank you. You are rather hot yourself, even though I've never met you. Let's meet at some cozy little online hole-in-the-wall--" Okay, no more typing for me.

There really is nothing you can say.

Wow.

Online flirtation has suddenly lost all its sparkly appeal for me.

Now that I am thoroughly disenchanted, I'm going to huddle over my laptop and configure my journal scripts. If my laptop gets warm enough, I can boil some water on top of it for some instant noodles!

Ahhh... my laptop... the only friend and appliance I'll ever need...

Well, it's contextual, really.

Said comments have probably been on or near photographs, which plants one in a social lock-in, wherein there's no reverse equivalent; you're not at their photo, you can't hear their voice, you can't see their obscure little quirks. There's nnnnnnnnnno way to counterbat such a thing.

'Thanks. I daresay your avatar is most hot.'

That's not to say there's no point- the problem is on the receiving end; always. At least the bigger of any problems.

Generally when somebody tells me something can do anything, I reply with stock in-joke 'does it boil water?'. But you've already said it does. Lllllllllock-in!

My mother always told me that when someone hands you a compliment, you should just say, "Thank you." This way, they know their comment is appreciated. If you say, "Oh no, I'm not that attractive," you are insulting their judgement. It's like saying, "HA! You have no taste at all!" But, if you gush, "Oh, thanks so much! What is it that you like? Isn't my hair pretty?" you run the risk of fishing for compliments and/or being a tease/flirt. If you return the compliment, "Oh, thanks! You're astonishingly gorgeouos, too!" it devalues the compliment. Somewhat akin to only saying "I love you," when someone says it to you. Imagine if you said, "I love you," to everyone who said that phrase to you, regardless of how long you've known them. Some would be put off. "How could you possibly know that you love me? I've been stalking you since grade school, monitoring your every move, compiling a virtual dosier on how you are the most perfect, lovable person in the world! You've never met me, though, so how can YOU love ME?" And, not saying anything at all makes you appear snobbish.

"Thank you," is the safest and simplest way of acknowledging a compliment.

And, not all compliments are forms of flattery or come-ons. I, for instance, must remark upon everything beautiful that I find. It's my way of making sure that no one is in ignorance of their own good qualities. How many people feel down because nobody told them, "Gee, you've done a beautiful job!" or "My, whatever did you do with your hair? It's lovely!" We are each other's reflections.

But if I'm going post about the art of giving compliments, I'll have to do it on my own journal.

inziladun In reply to GnKit [2004-08-10 15:43:21 +0000 UTC]

Uh, no it isn't the same thing.. The Odyssey is the original epic poem-formed one, written by Homer, and Ulysses is the prosaic translation of that, written a lot later.
In any case, this isn't about either book, so let's leave it at that.

You must be looking at the wrong side. Ulysses is a way bigger candidate for Shakespaereness than I. I can't go within a few metres of my monitor without getting all static'd up.
