Whether you want to make the background first or last is up to your preference, really C=
First off, it's good to start with the idea of what you want to draw clear in your head. Ask yourself this:
how much detail does the background need to have the effect I want?
If the answer is, "a lot of detail," like in these picture: [link] Then my advice would be to do the background first.
If it does not require too much attention, like here [link] then I wouldn't worry about it until I'm done with the subjects (in my picture's case, my subjects were Link & Toon Link).

If you're referring to layer modes, I'm guessing what happened to you was that your subject became transparent? =3 You shouldn't change the mode on the layer you're coloring. It needs to be solid. If you're going to mess with the layer modes, do it for added effects or color changes.
Many people change the "lineart" layer mode to "multiply." It depends on how you choose to work.

As for "washes," I meant adding a new blank layer on top of everything & splashing colors to it with a big brush. THIS is where I mess with layer modes. To see what effects I get get, or to mess with the opacity.

I hope everything was clear to you. If not, feel free to ask again! If you need more pictures for help, let me know.

I usually like to employ thick lines over thin lines, for some reason. I think it might be a carry over from my obsessive love for Invader Zim and its art style (well...not as obsessive as I used to be about it...more like they were very fond childhood memories of mine).

Coloring is something else entirely tho. I'm trying to established my own methods and I'm getting better...but it still pretty much just kicks my ass all the time.

BUT ANYWAY. You make Link look BEAUTIFUL (both of them). Mostly because the dotted coloring dazzles me a bit.

OsHoshi In reply to Bozeia [2009-04-26 02:50:55 +0000 UTC]

Ahaha, really? I'm a big fan of Jhonen Vasquez (creator of Invader Zim) myself! He's one of my influences! I also love that straight, thick, edgy look of his style! Did you ever browsed through any of his comics? I think he's dark style is best portrayed in those, cuz they're only black & white. & his use of ink is sometimes creepy! XD

Anyway.. (sorry about that ramble..) Coloring is indeed a whole other world. So I don't think I have a style for it myself yet. It's very tedious.. I gather lotsa diff pics to experiment mimicking different coloring styles. & this pic was particularly based of the style I found in some japanese blogs that I browse through. They're very colorful! (I even used the same palette XD)

So just keep trying out, look at others peep's works & have LOTSA patience! ^_~

Bozeia In reply to OsHoshi [2009-04-26 04:31:17 +0000 UTC]

Shit, dude. I own almost ALL of his comics. Johnny the Homicidal Maniac. I Feel Sick. Squee...I don't have anything after that. I've been lax about it recently.

BUT. I'm sure it would please you to know that JtHM and IFS are among some of favorite stories, ever. Nay, some of my favorite comic book series of all time, ever. I love the supernatural (partly because I watched Invader Zim and, during one of the commentaries, someone asked what the show would've been like without Zim, and if it was just Dib doing all his other paranormal work...I was like HELL YEAH, I'LL SO DO THAT ) and I also love all the philosophical themes thrown around in it. It also has a bit of Chekhov's Gun here and there, which is a big bonus for me.

I probably should exiperiment with coloring in blank linearts...I don't always have time to go through and ink my own artwork lately tho. College can be a bitch.

And yeah! I know what you mean. Sometimes things I see on tegakie.com will bleach my eyes out from sheer color overload. WHICH ISN'T A BAD THING. Cuz', you know, I do love me some colorz~.

Ohhh, really? Cool! ^^ Mr. Vasquez sure has influenced a lot of artists from this generation. Even the japanese!! XD
Quite frankly, I cant get much into American comics, but his are an exception. Hurray for that!

Oohh, college! I understand. & I'm gunna graduate soon~~~~ oAo;;

just hang in there!

You do Link well.

God I ove Link, they should do more games like OoT, the game was so fun! But they should have as many side quests as WW... And the graphics of TP. Oh god, please, Miyamoto, combine them xD. Basically, Zelda games are GODLY! And you way of doing link its fan dabby dosy.

*Hi 5's*

Miyamoto is one of the best men to roam the planet. Although I feel like the Wii is selling out, and down with DSI and DSlite, DS classic is for me xD. OR they can come up with a whole new console, please tell me the Wii2 is a lie T.T. I want there originality back.

Dear lord, I appologise for ranting. xD

sorry for the late reply. Thank you kindly for your comment! ^_^

Well, the DSi aint bad, my older bro just got it recently. Love the new browser feature! & WarioWare snapped looks like fun! ^0^ Tho, I MYSELF still have the old first DS, in hot red color XD

I heard the next nintendo home console is in development ONLY BCUZ the company has to keep moving forward to try to stay ahead in the industry. But it wont be out for a while, so dont worry just yet! ^^

I agree that Miyamoto-sensei is a brilliant man, or else, where would my beloved Nintendo be?? -^^- & yes, Zelda games are always a win! I must admit that the only Zelda game I dont OWN is the Crossbow Training game for wii.. you should know why ^^'

Feel free to rant about Zelda or other nintendo stuff with me anytime OR shaman king, nyahahahahaha!

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

chiisai-mini In reply to OsHoshi [2009-04-07 15:18:22 +0000 UTC]

Hahaha, I actually have crossbow training xD. My mum got me it for christmas because it was Zelda but it's ust like a target game, not all the bad but not the game I go running to...

I was on a Wii website adn it says Wii2 is in praduction, I pray to god it isn't. I liked the gamecube the best, the wii tries to hard to get us active and if gamers wanted to be activ they wouldn't play games all the time xD.

I don't like it when companys use th same desing for things, that's why I loved nintendo, they veried so much but with the DS, then DSlite THEN DSi it peeved me a tad because it's practically the same thing but with diffrent features...

Well I can't help but continue to be their fan. & I'll keep buying things they make that I feel are worth my money.

I don't actually play as much games nowadays anyway.. =v=;

I wish i would understand what a ''ressure-sensitive brush'' is.><

Kekeke, i like your way to draw.
It's much more efficiently than mine.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

OsHoshi In reply to HakuryuVision [2009-02-09 01:24:07 +0000 UTC]

Oh, sorry..
To draw in the computer, I use a tablet like this: [link] The "pen" is called a "stylus" & it has the ability to sense the pressure applied to it on the tablet board. That's what you call "pressure-sensitivity"

When using this function in a photoshop brush, when you make light strokes, your lines are small in the canvas. But if you press hard (applying more pressure), then your brush size gets thicker! It's really great! You can't do that with a mouse or in tegaki.. [link]

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

HakuryuVision In reply to OsHoshi [2009-02-09 15:47:51 +0000 UTC]

I have a tablet (or rather had one, broke last week) but its ''ressure-sensitivity'' was rather primitive. -_-Β°

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

OsHoshi In reply to HakuryuVision [2009-03-01 19:18:13 +0000 UTC]

how "primitive"?? =\

& I'm sorry it broke, man! They're not cheap! What'd u do to it anyway?? >=1

XD

HakuryuVision In reply to OsHoshi [2009-03-02 21:02:17 +0000 UTC]

Nothing!><
It just doesn't work in the right way anymore...
(duh, how shall i explain? i hope my english won't let me down here: )
Even when i'm NOT pressing the pen on the tablet it's still drawing lines the whole time.
I tried out so many things to fix it, but yeah, broken is broken.

...and sadly, they aren't cheap as you said...

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

OsHoshi In reply to HakuryuVision [2009-03-09 05:52:53 +0000 UTC]

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

OsHoshi In reply to HakuryuVision [2009-04-26 04:54:18 +0000 UTC]

so anyways. Have you tried re-installing the driver?
Here you should find the PenPartner version you have matched up with your Operating System [link]

It's from the Wacom website itself, so it's trusty. Download it, run it, see if works. Sometimes when my tablet feels like being stupid, I do that & it works! Sometimes I have to restart my computer.... =.=

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

HakuryuVision In reply to OsHoshi [2009-04-26 11:58:23 +0000 UTC]

Yes, i already tried it out once, but it still won't work.
But anyway, my father will ask a friend who works for wacom.
I'll get a new one, but i'll just have to wait (again...).
