Description

This is only the second serious attempt at drawing in orca in a very long time. Considering this, I think it's pretty good.

Tools used:

Mechanical Pencil
4B, 5B, and F graphite pencils
Kneaded Eraser
Tortillion

I didn't edit it after putting it onto my computer except for adding a frame. I much rather it in real life because my scanner made the shading look unsmooth.

Any advice is welcome

Beautiful! The sheen on the rostrum is an especially neat touch!

Beautiful! I love the shine on the rostrum!
As for some teeny critiques: I think you should use more different levels of shading. Here, you have black, a grey, and some white. Experiment with different shadings, and also remember the light reflecting off the water would create a highlight on the belly.
Also, make the water "splashier", with lots of droplets and stuff. Try using pictures for reference.
The anatomy and pose looks great, I can't wait to see more!

Thanks for that awesome critique! I'll keep all of those things in mind next time I draw... sadly I don't know when that'll be. Hopefully soon!

You're off to a good start. I would only suggest working on the backgroud, but I have trouble with backgrounds anyway, looking forward to more drawings!

I've put up two more drawings since this one. They don't have backgrounds either but I still think I've been improving, lol.

Thanks for the comment!

Nice sketch! Hmm, my advanced crit would be to blend the shading around the dorsal region a bit more (but if that's from your scanner, then never mind). The white flank patch should be larger and longer too. Also, you could add some smaller water droplets in the splash coming from the pectoral and dorsal fins. And backgrounds are fun to make so if you make a creative background it'll look more complete. :3 Hope that helps!

OrcaInspired In reply to Tillikum [2007-04-18 20:31:06 +0000 UTC]

It does In the ref. picture I used the white flank patch was that thin (or thinner O.o).

Thanks for the advice
