A person’s brightest smile can hide the darkest secrets.

It all started during your first semester of college.
After weeks of agonizing thought, you had decided to pursue your dream of studying abroad.
Hours upon hours were spent studying as much as humanly possible, from the country's language to the culture to basic information needed in every day life.
Not to mention the overwhelming amount of studying for exams that required your undivided attention.

But once you set your mind to something, you were determined to see it through to the end.
Despite not being shocked, relief did wash over you when you received an official letter confirming your application to Sungsoo University in South Korea.

Once arriving in the country, however, reality hit you like a ton of bricks.
New home, new school, new friends, new life.

The idea of starting over completely from scratch was terrifying.
But you committed yourself to this, and had no intentions of backing out.

What a foolish decision...

The first day of classes came and went. Then another day. And another.

Your stress slowly began to melt away as you fell into a new routine.
Classes were off to a good start.
And despite not making an actual friend yet, your peers didn’t seem to mind your presence.

That was when you met him.

Thanks to your stupid alarm that chose to remain silent that morning, you had rushed to make it to class on time.
As you turned the corner and hurriedly entered the doorway of your class, you accidentally ran straight into a solid object.
Stumbling back, a rough hand grabbed your wrist, helping you regain your footing.

“I’m so sorry!” You immediately apologized, flustered over your carelessness.

“No problem. Are you okay?”

Looking up, you locked eyes with the one person who would change your life forever.

“I don’t think I’ve seen you around before. I’m Oh Sangwoo.” He introduced, snapping you out of your daze.

“Y-yeah, I’m new to town. I’m actually from (Country Name). My name is (Last Name) (First Name). It’s really nice to meet you. And um.. thank you for helping me.” You replied sheepishly.

That small interaction lead to more lengthy conversations.
After a few weeks, you had found Sangwoo to be a great friend.

He was extremely kind, and accepted you immediately.

If questioned, you would describe him as a helpful, laid back guy who was easily able to brighten a person's day.
And despite being popular, he remained modest.
Sangwoo always made time for you, and you found yourself thoroughly enjoying your newfound friendship.

With the help of Sangwoo, you even decided to find a permanent home close by.
There wasn't a single doubt in your mind :
Your future would be in South Korea.

If only you knew the truth back then...

Even after graduating and obtaining employment, you and Sangwoo had remained close friends.

As time went on, though, he seemed to grow a little distant.
You noticed that Sangwoo had been hanging around a particular girl, but that had abruptly stopped one day.

Concerned that he was possibly going through a tough break up, you approached your two-tone haired friend.
Sangwoo assured you that everything was fine, and that he hadn’t seen or spoken to the girl in several days.

According to him, the girl was planning to move away with her parents and had assumed that was the reason behind their lack of communication.
At that time, you had absolutely no reason to doubt your friend.

If only you had known the dangers of befriending a wolf in sheep’s clothing...

Since graduating, it was a typical routine for you and Sangwoo to meet at least twice a week to hang out and catch up on life.

But Sangwoo hadn’t showed up three times in a row.
That was extremely odd, even for him.
No matter how busy or hectic life was, Sangwoo never failed to meet up with you.

Worried about your friend, you decided to take action and visit him.

Talk about digging your own grave...

It didn’t take long to arrive at his home.

*Knock knock*

The door creaked open, revealing a surprised Sangwoo.

“(Name)? What are you doing here?” He asked dumbfounded.

“I was worried something bad happened to you.” You answered before handing him a small box of freshly baked pastries.

“These are from that new bakery that just opened. The one you were supposed to meet me at.” You teased before looking at him with a concerned expression.

“Is everything okay, Sangwoo? It’s not like you to miss hanging out together. Plus you’ve seemed a little distracted these past few weeks.” You pointed out.

“I’m fine, just busy. Work has been kicking my ass lately.” Sangwoo replied smoothly, running a calloused hand through his hair.

“Oh, I see. Well... I don’t mean to put you on the spot, so feel free to say no... but since I’m here, would we be able to hang out now?” You asked hopefully.

Sangwoo seemed caught off guard at first.
He stood in the doorway for a moment before hesitantly stepping aside to allow you entrance into his home.

After being led into the kitchen, he opened the box of sweet smelling pastries.
You both indulged in the delectable sweets as you chatted.
Nothing out of the ordinary.
An hour or two had gone by before he excused himself, walking in the direction of the bathroom.

You used this opportunity to stretch your limbs.

Standing up from the kitchen chair, you slowly shuffled down the hallway.
As you passed a bedroom, a noise immediately caught your attention.
It sounded like something or someone had stumbled inside the closet.

Sangwoo lived alone, didn't he?
You knew he didn't have any pets.
And there’s no way a rodent would be able to make such a distinct and loud noise.

Slowly, you entered the room and approached the closet door.
As you cautiously slid the door open, your eyes widened in shock.

Sitting inside was a scrawny man.
He looked to possibly be in his late twenties.
He was covered in bruises and bandages, dark circles under his eyes from obvious lack of sleep.
The man’s ribs were immediately noticeable, confirming his lack of proper nutrition.

The last thing you remembered seeing was the fear in his eyes before everything went black.

When you finally woke up, you found yourself in an unfamiliar room.
Your head was throbbing.
But when you tried to reach up and touch the tender spot on your cranium, you discovered that your hands were chained to a nearby pipe.

“Rise and shine”

The familiar voice immediately caught your attention.

“Sangwoo? What’s going on? Where am I?” You questioned your friend, both confused and distressed.

“If you had just minded you own damn business, you wouldn’t be in this situation. You have nobody to blame except yourself.”

Before you could question him any further, the man you had grown so close to pulled out a metal baseball bat.

“Don’t take it personally. I just can’t risk having you run to the police. This will ensure that won’t happen.”

A loud, agonizing scream filled the air as the feeling of metal smashing bone erupted through your leg.

This was only an introduction to the torture you would endure at the hands of your so called ‘best friend’.
For weeks, you experienced Sangwoo’s brutality.
You had been repeatedly beaten, cut, choked, and nearly drowned.

It didn't take long before your captor officially introduced you to the man you had met in the closet.
His name was YoonBum, and you had become his fellow prisoner.

Despite your grim situation, you never once begged for your life.
No matter what he put you through, you didn’t want to give Sangwoo that satisfaction of hearing you cry and beg like a pathetic dog.

Not only that, but Sangwoo would occasionally claim that he “wouldn’t kill his dearest friend”.

Of course, he would contradict himself by threatening your life on an almost daily basis or whenever you displeased him.
Yet on the other hand, he would still show you kindness in the form of gentle kisses, head pats, and his cheery smile that you used to love.
Sangwoo, on occasion, would order you to sleep next to him.
He would tell you about himself, delving into parts of his childhood.

It made you feel both sympathetic and sickened.

Under normal circumstances, you would be supportive of your friend and assure him of all his wonderful qualities.
You’d tell him that he didn’t do anything to deserve the harsh treatment of his father, and that he was a strong person for getting through those difficult times.

But you were unable to do that now.
Every little praise and words of endearment that left your mouth were lies, fueled by the fear of his punishments if you had chosen against consoling him.

The psychological abuse was worse than the physical wounds inflicted upon you.

Sangwoo would exploit your close bond, trying to sexually arouse you at any given chance.
You couldn’t deny how attractive the man was. Bat shit insane, yet very attractive.

And while you would never voluntarily give yourself over to a man who shows violence towards you, your body reacted differently to his longing touches and kisses.

Sangwoo even tried to force you and Yoonbum to have sexual relations, telling Bum to “have fun with her, and stop being so fucking jealous.”

There was a time when you hoped for a future with Sangwoo.
But now, the mere idea of looking at him in a positive light was enough to make you vomit.

After a while, you reached your breaking point.

You had gone from being petrified to numb to absolutely irate.
You were pissed off.
Both at yourself, and Sangwoo.

How could you be so stupid?
Why did you trust him?
How could he do this to two innocent people?
What gave him the right to treat you like a prisoner who was guilty of some horrendous crime?

One evening while you and YoonBum were making dinner, you snapped.
Slamming a pot into the kitchen counter, two sets of eyes immediately landed on your malnourished form.

“Care to explain your little outburst, dear?” Sangwoo questioned, his gaze on you like a predator watching it’s prey.

“I’m done.”

“What?”

“I said... I. Am. Fucking. Done.” You repeated, emphasizing each individual word.

Sangwoo stood from his seat and slowly approached you, your back to him.

“I-It’s okay, Sangwoo. I can finish dinner myself.” YoonBum offered nervously, attempting to intervene in hopes of sparing you.

Fat chance...

The sadistic man stopped a foot away from you, his eyes glaring holes in your back.

“Get back to work.” He ordered, expecting compliance.

“No.”

In response, Sangwoo grabbed a handful of your hair and roughly threw you to the floor.
A bitter laugh escaped your lips.

“You expect us to do as you say, day in and day out. You beat us... torture us... force us to assist you in  murder! Yet despite that, you act like we should show you unconditional love and respect.” You glared at the man in front of you.

Your feelings of betrayal and hatred towards him had finally reached it’s limit.
There was only one way to escape Sangwoo's grasp.
And you were both physically and mentally prepared for what was to come.

“You’re just like your father.”

Silence and tension filled the room for what seemed like an eternity.
YoonBum looked petrified.
The timid man shrunk in the corner of the room.
He knew that it was best to steer clear of the impending disaster about to take place.

Now, it was Sangwoo’s turn to snap.

The last moments of your life involved a pair of strong, vice-like hands around your throat and the look of pure rage on your ex best friend's face as one final breath left your battered and broken body.

With the end of your life came the harshest lesson.
Never judge a book by it's cover

The kindest, most accepting people can be capable of the most sinister actions.
