Description I read this book a while back called 'The Lives of the Monster Dogs" by Kirstin Bakkis, wherein this mad German scientist develops a race of sentient, bipedal dogs to be used as soldiers.

The story begins in the 1890's and stretches into the 2000's. Because of their isolated society, the dogs keep the customs of the world that they knew, therefore they still had a very strict, turn of the century way of doing things. This book is totally worth a read.

The idea has clearly stuck with me.

One of my all-time favorite books and a great depiction of Ludwig. I love the detail in his uniform and the bold colors. I've always remembered Ludwig as being a husky/malamute for some odd reason, but it's been a while since I read the book. Anyways, wonderful job.

Wasn't the villain dog the malamute? It's been awhile for me as well.

Thanks! Glad to find other fans of such an obscure book.

I LOVE this book. It's one of the few in my collection (along with Watership Down and Wuthering Heights) that I've read more than twice.

This is a great image. I've tried to draw the dogs myself but never really succeeded.

Sounds like a fascinating book; I'll have to see if my library system has it.
Ludwig's expression is great. My dogs make that face sometimes, and I've always thought it was interesting how they could look so human.
Beautiful work!

It was really fun to read. Some good bits of character development, although I will warn you that I was NOT fond of the heroine. I sort of wish that she had been dispensed with.

Otherwise, totally worth it.

Thanks!

Good job making him very doggy and intelligent at the same time. As always, love the colors.

The book sounds interesting. Do the soldier-dogs maintain other dog qualities, like behavioral or social habits?

Yes, to a certain extent. They were originally chosen as the animal of choice due to their loyalty, strength and smarts.
The details were really interesting.

Thanks!

Thanks! It was a book that I totally bought because of the cover and the title.
Although... as I recall now Ludwig was a black German Shepherd was he not?
D'oh!

As I told you, I love this! He's so distinguished in a world-weary, scruffy sort of way; and of course the complimentary colors gives it extra kick. And per usualy your eye for detail in the uniform is lovely.
