Description

Edit: Now complete with not-lazy background!

I recently acquired Color and Light by James Gurney, so I did this to try out some of the techniques he talks about. This is Hyacinth, a Parasaurolophus. She is the Partner of Andrew Ekking, and they become Theo and Frank’s mentors after Theo graduates from the Academy. She’s not actually piebald (white with brown patches); she’s tan, darkening to mottled brown at her tail and lightening to white at her head. She has a black patch over the lower part of her face and the underside of her neck and chest, as well as a small black spot on her shoulder.

It’s really really hard to paint a white dinosaur using dark gray, blue, and pink. Makes my brain hurt. Lazy background is lazy

What a pretty dinosaur! ^_^ Parasaurolophus's are some of my favorite dinosaurs; the way they're said to bellow with the horn on their heads makes me think they must be pretty good singers!

I really like the graceful curve of their crests, it's so much prettier than other hadrosaurs. They're one of my favorites too

I saw it first as a thumbnail and thought it was a photograph for a moment. I really like how the eye turned out.  I'm not sure of the iris' oval shape, but you even caught the reflected gleam on the lens.  The upward angle of the mouth makes it seem like it's smiling askance at the viewer.  Even if the backdrop weren't blurred, the dinosaur's compelling realism in the foreground would still be gripping; the blurring only adds to that impression.  Since you already have an idea of what Hyacinth looks like, I'm eager to see what that looks like.  If it's better than this,... *whistle*

This is simply amazing! Beautiful details, and great use of subtle skin tones!

I'd love to learn how to paint white by using various colors... Would you recommend the book?

I would absolutely recommend the book. I have another one by him called Imaginative Realism, which is good too.

If I had to choose, I'd get Color and Light. It focuses more on painting techniques and composition in general, while the other one focuses more on making made-up things look and feel believable. They're both good though, and worth the price.
