Remember how I said you wouldn't be seeing much more colored pencil work from me? Well, I lied. See that was back before I knew how to do this.Don't get me wrong, I still hate drawing with just plain old colored pencils. But I have just this last week discovered a new technique, colored pencil on graphite, and I am in love with it. It's got all the crisp detail and clarity of my pencil work, but now in 100% traditional technicolor.
The only trouble with this technique is the process of graphite pencil, fixative, dry time, colored pencil, fixative, dry time. My mom doesn't like me spraying the fixative at home because the fumes are really strong, so I've been doing all my spraying while I'm at school.
But enough whining. I drew a cheetah! And I'm so happy!

I know! I was thumbing through a bunch of ref photos which all had strong points, but this particular pose was so darling I had to do it, hands down.

This is beautiful, I really love the bright colours! How does the graphite on pencil technique work?

First, I started with the graphite drawing (I added a linking the description if you want to see it) and then I sprayed it with a fixative spray. I use the Krylon brand Workable Fixative (www.krylon.com/products/workab… ). You need to let it dry for an hour, but once the fixative is dry, you can color on top of it with colored pencil. The fixative is important, because I've heard that if you don't fix it, the graphite will smudge. Once I finished, for good measure I spray fixed it again because colored pencil has a habit of smearing and developing wax bloom.
