Saladin: *twitches around uncomfortably as his features scrunch up in thought* Apologies if I seem a little tense---this question brings me down a lane of memories I would rather keep buried. *awkward laugh* Actually, I met him during my time in captivity. He was originally my....punching bag for the lack of a better word.
See, while normal Pokemon get quite a fair share on the black market, the ones that have been specifically trained up for battle get a king's ransom of sales, so to do that without 'damaging the goods', these upstanding gentlemen invented this whole bussiness of baiting; Using other, less-lucrative Pokemon as bait for the rest.
Gilgamesh made a good bait Pokemon---massive defense stats kept him from dying in any one of sessions, and all they needed to do was to chain him up, defang his upper jaw and snap off some of his spines so he wouldn't be able to kill any of us in retaliation.
They didn't need to of course; Gil is as gentle as they come. He'd just sit there and look at you with this sad, broken and empty stare while you wiped the floor with him. The kind that told you he wanted to die.
He gave me the same look when I was suppose to bait him.
I refused. I got beaten for that bit of insubordinance, but that probably woke him up a little since it seemed like no one had ever said "No" up to that point.
After that, we sort of met on and off during transport sessions; He was never going to be sold off, and I was too defiant at that point of time to be of market value. Our quarters were next to each other after nearly everyone else was shipped off, and we had no one else to talk to save each other and the walls--since our sanity was still intact, we chose the former.
He learned I was craddle-snatched, I discovered that he used to have a family; wife and son. Said son who I am told was a lot like me was apparently killed when they tried to corral him, and his wife was never seen again after they marked her for a breeding mill in somewhere in Hoenn.
Needless to say, we saw each other as replacement figures for what we'd lost, gave each other a reason for living and he began to train me to become stronger, not end up as collateral on the battle floor.
Unfortunately, the men keeping us captive soon found a buyer for me who didn't quite mind my rebellious streak---a fiend in charge of an underground fighting pit looking for his next pugilist.
That's when Gil and I decided to make a run for it. Getting out was the easy part; The guards had become too comfortable with their routine, and I managed to coldcock one of them as he brought in the day's dinner. I stole his keys while Gil feigned an Outrage to keep the guards' attention on himself. I released those who remained; From then on, the pandemonium was easy to manipulate. I freed Gil as they were busy trying to corral everyone back, and we headed for the hills.
Running away was a little harder; At any rate, the men must have been very angry, or I must have been worth quite a bit of money, because they did not stop chasing us!
