Description
With the matches completed Diane moved to the locker room. Her first job was to just make sure no one was lingering and as usual no one was about. Secondly she’d hop into the pool to sluice off before hitting the hot tub to unwind.
It was a routine she’d adopted in the first week. Bouncing around, up and down from knees to feet and back again, plus monitoring 14 matches was a drain on her both mentally and physically. She found the alone time both relaxing and quieting.
That’s why she was a bit startled to find Brianna sitting alone on the edge of the pool.
“Oh. Brianna. I didn’t think anyone was here.”
“Yeah…. Just taking a few minutes.” The resident JSG Queen of the Pool barely looked up from the water. “I figured you’d be along sooner or later.”
“You ok?” a concerned Diane asked.
“Not really but it’ll pass Im sure.”
“What’s up?” Diane asked, this time sliding into the warm water of the pool along side the sitting woman.
“Ah…. You know. Things aren’t going so great for me in this league. It’s getting to me.”
“Listen, don’t worry about it. Had you ever done this before?”
“Not really.”
“Did you think it would be easy?”
Brianna hesitated, caught a bit off guard by the question. “No, of course not, but I didn’t think I’d be losing every week either.”
“Don’t forget some of these girls have been doing this. Some have some battles under their belts. Some have had easier draws than you have. There is a learning curve. You’ve got some talent but so has everyone else. You and some of the others just have to learn how to channel your physical gifts, your mental acuity and your drive all a once toward the end goal. It’ll come. You are just not quite there yet. You are an athlete and losing probably is tough to swallow in someone with your compete level. Dig deeper into what you know you have and you’ll get a win. And Im noticing once someone gets one then that’s a confidence builder and the pressure is off. You have to get one before you get 3 or 4 or 5. Focus on that and not the big picture. That comes later.”
They continued to talk and chat and just discuss the league and Brianna’s desire. Brianna took it all in and was feeling better that at least she talked her frustrations out.
“You going to be good?” Diane finally asked.
“I am. Thanks Diane. Now get in that pool and give me 20 laps!”
“Easy there, Kid. Don’t forget who you are talking to. I have great influence over the woman that signs your paychecks.”
They smiled.
“Ok then, I’ll leave you to your vices then. You going to be ok?”
“I have been to this point every week. I don’t this will be any different.”
“Fine by me.” And Brianna turned a headed toward the locker room.
Diane watched her go through the door before slipping fully into the pool. She made 4 or 5 strokes and decided the heck with it.
That hot tub is a much better idea than this swimming business tonight.
