Description Animal PortraitsSome animal portraits from my recent visit to game reserves in KwaZulu Natal, South Africa. Note that all the animals shown are in the wild, not zoos. They are living in their natural habitat.
You do not want to mess with this fellow, an aging male Cape Buffalo (Syncerus caffer) also known as a Dugga Boy. While most Cape Buffalo hang out in herd of up to 500, the older males who are past their reproductive and physical prime tend to move out of a herd and wander in small bachelor herds of 2- 5. "Dugga" means mud, and the preferred occupation of a Dugga Boy is the wallow in mud pools. Dugga Boys are extremely dangerous animals, those in a main herd simply being dangerous. Apart from lions and humans, a Dugga Boy has no predator capable of bringing it down and even lions are very wary of attacking such a beast. Any human who unwittingly comes close is likely to be charged and gored to death.

It's amazing how something that was once looked upon as unattractive, can lose that quality after one gets to see it's loving nature.  And vice-versa, too.. !! !!

I've got a real soft spot for these guys, Bob. Encountered one years ago at a lodge - very friendly and it went to sleep with its head on my lap!

Another animal qualifying for the word "Ugly"!   Great capture, David.

Yes, to our eyes the warthog is ugly, but having met one, once upon a time, they can be very friendly, and I've got a real soft spot for them.

Many Thanks

That is great, David!  However, friendliness lies within every living creature and what we see outside is completely different.  I am very much comfortable with your experience with the warthog and it won a"soft spot" in your heart.  It must have done something to win that "soft spot".  I am not condemning it but only describing it as my eye sees it and then the message it sends to my mind and my mind looks into its dictionary and finds the word "ugly" as a suitable description of this animal!         INTIBANE in isiZulu language

Thank you kindly!  Canon is coming up with that Full Frame Mirrorless beast.  Are you going to test it?

Saw the promos for their new system. Not sure that I'm in the market for it just now - no spare cash, Henry. The new house/home is sucking up all liquid assets!! If the camera can take the lenses that I have and deliver on quality of image, maybe it would be a worthwhile system.

Besides, even if there was liquid cash, I do not believe that we should chase the new technology.  Lust is normal but chasing technology is not normal - to me.  Anyway, the tools that are already there are capable to deliver - I believe.

Cheers!

Agreed, Henry. It is the eye and the lens that are the more important components. We shall see what the reviewers think once some images have ben posted.
