.... gosh this picture reminds me of the very first time I watched Princess Tutu, and my heart was ACHING for them to end up together ... c':
I love all of the characters so dearly, and now on my fifth watching of the show, I ship all the ships (especially Fakir/Ahiru) ... but this one will always have a special place in my heart as the beautiful, impossible romance; the love prevented by fate itself ♥

YES the first season!! That whole time ... I shipped them so hard I thought my heart might break! ;3; ... Both of them so gentle and kind ... so well-suited for one another ... ! DAMN YOU, DROSSELMEYER!!
But like I said, I came to adore the actual ending ... and for the same reason you do. It's the bittersweet aspects of it that make it so lovely. ♥

I agree, and I really like that Ahiru stays a duck at the end, because that's what she is; she stayed true to herself and was selfless even though she had to give up so much. I think the story wouldn't have the same impact if the ending was different.

Ahiru changed the story because she was herself ... because she stayed true to her feelings of pure, selfless love and loyalty ... and I think there's something to be said about that. Perhaps even a comment on humanity; like perhaps the nature of humanity is intrinsically selfish, and since Ahiru wasn't human, she wasn't consumed with human desires (like the need to be with Mytho, for instance).
She could put the well-being of everyone else ahead of herself ... because basically she's the sweetest, most awesome character EVER. ♥

I'd really like to see what would happen if Ahiru's personality was different; if she was more selfish the story would've probably ended very differently, haha.
