Description Because I don't know the meaning of leaving adequate time before a deadline, I've been working on this picture for four hours straight today and probably three hours straight yesterday. Oops?

This is my entry for Christopher-Hart 's fantasy creature competition! She's based roughly on a carpet python (her markings were crazy hard and baffling to draw, I don't have much practice with asymmetrical random patterns) and she's like...a huntress-mage. The staff is good for magic and for stabbing, because she is nothing if not practical and figures why have two weapons for magic and physical battle when you can have one?

Do you know what's fun to shade? Weird chitinous bug material is fun to shade. It's great.

All comments and critiques welcome, as usual!Ā

I believe that is a Lamia

A lot of people use 'naga' and 'lamia' interchangably, but naga is the more common term for a snake-person and it's the term I prefer to use.

(If we're going to get technical about it, neither would be a suitable term because she's not a deity nor is she the correct ethnicity to be an actual naga, and Lamia was originally a specific individual in Greek mythology rather than a species.)

There is no correct term for a snake-girl (apart from perhaps snake-girl). Basically, people can pick the ones they like. I like 'naga'.

The comment you're replying to is over a year old, haha.

But yeah. That's not necessarily what defines the differences? In popular culture the interpretations of naga and lamia have become practically identical - with 'lamia' ranging anywhere from fully humanoid demons to snake-people, and with 'naga' being anywhere from snake-from-the-waist-down (mermaid style) or more like a fully anthropomorphic snake. If it's a snake person, someone might end up calling it one of the two?

But in actual mythology they're definitely very different. Lamia was a Greek mythologyical figure: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lamia and the Naga is a snake deity: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/N%C4%81gā€¦

So basically almost everyone's fantasy naga/lamia are wrong in the first place, but 'naga' is definitely closer to the original meaning if you're going to talk people with snake tails.

This is one of my favourite things you've done.

Where's her snake half's underbelly?

Haha, consider it a little artistic license. I know on a realistic level she ought to have one but I was sort of rushing this out for a overly nearby deadline and skimped out on a few things I would have otherwise drawn. :L

Yeah. Not that there's really any requirement to draw an underbelly on a naga that's identical to a real snake's, anyway. I mean, if one was to be 'realistic' about it they'd probably only have belly on the end half of their tail. Seeing as the upper half spends most of its time off of the ground (at least in the way people typically depict nagas) and all it'd render having belly scales on the upper half pretty redundant.

True but then again a cobra can kinda stand up

Yes, but that's not how they typically move themselves along. They don't just crawl along on their butt ends with their heads in the air.Ā

Man, it's nice to see a female naga without giant balloon breasts and vaginal scales that make no sense.

She's really pretty and I'm not too sure what actually makes me like her. You know? Since I don't often find a female naga design I like.

Thank you! I'm glad you like her, whatever the reason might be. And yeah, honestly, the female naga art pool is so oversaturated with oversexualised lemon-balloon-tit-weilding....blearghness. I like to try and even the balance a little, haha.Ā

You don't mean an underbelly by vaginal scales do you?

No, I don't. Not at all.
